The town’s history can also be followed at individual sites. Historical Society markers are located at historic sites throughout the town. On 1st Street and at the museum, you can trace the story of Chesty Puller using historical markers. The historic Marshall Oyster House stood at the intersection of 1st Street and Lee Street on the Mattaponi, while the Richardson Oyster House was located on the Pamunkey. At these centers, oysters were unloaded, expertly shucked, and packed for shipment by steamboat and railroad.

Today’s cultural landmarks also include West Point’s first original mural at 621 Main Street and a Virginia-is-for-Lovers LOVEworks sign. At Beach Park, the history of the former Terminal Hotel complex is commemorated: it once included a boardwalk and amusement rides; today, the park offers West Point’s public beach and direct paddler access to the York River.

Paddling between the Creek, Mattaponi, and York River

Several different launch points are available for active days. The West Point Creek launch point on 13th Street in downtown leads to the calm West Point Creek, where paddlers can experience a diverse range of wildlife and plant life. Glass Island Landing offers a separate launch point for the Mattaponi River. On 5th Street, you can reach the Mattaponi from a sandy beach in downtown. Those looking for a livelier paddling trip will find a different river experience on the York River from the town center.

Market, Music, and Regional Cuisine

West Point has a historic shopping and dining district in its downtown. The West Point Crab Carnival is an annual fall festival held along the downtown waterfront. Fresh fish and seafood are offered there, along with live music on multiple stages. The West Point Farmers Market at the Pavilion at Riverwalk Park offered local produce, dairy and meat products, honey, starter plants, baked goods, and flowers on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. from May 16 through September 5, 2026; it did not take place on July 4. On selected Friday evenings in spring, summer, and fall, “Food Trucks by the River” brings local food trucks and wine to the Pavilion at Riverwalk Park from 5 to 8 p.m.
