Dahlgren: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Dahlgren
Dahlgren combines experiences in nature with an unusual military-historical character. Anyone planning a trip with outdoor excursions, historic traces and special discoveries will find a range of options for planning each day. A holiday apartment or holiday home in Dahlgren can serve as a base from which you can individually choose your focus among landscapes, trails, history and events.
Sandy Beaches, Birdwatching and Trails
Dahlgren Wayside Park is part of the Virginia Bird and Wildlife Trail. The park offers a sandy beach, picnic facilities and opportunities for birdwatching. This makes it possible to arrange your stay in a variety of ways: you can spend time by the water, plan a picnic break or make birdwatching the focus of an outing. This combination is particularly appealing to families because it brings active and quieter moments together in one day’s itinerary without requiring a fixed programme of visits.
Another specific opportunity for exercise and discovery is the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail. It is 15.7 miles (25.3 km) long and runs from the western edge of King George County to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division. Take this length into account when planning and choose the section or type of use that suits your planned stay. Anyone wishing to explore the region through another themed route can also visit the Native American Heritage Trail & GeoTour. It consists of seven information panels and ten geocaching puzzles.
Military History in Dahlgren
The history of the area is closely linked to the U.S. Naval Proving Ground, which was established on October 16, 1918. Naval Support Facility Dahlgren was established in 1918 on 4,000 acres in King George County between the Potomac River and Machodoc Creek as a remote extension of the Indian Head Proving Ground in Maryland for testing naval guns. This development continues to shape Dahlgren’s historical identity today.
A prominent historical artifact stands on Tisdale Road opposite Dahlgren Road: a 16-inch gun with 28.8 calibers. It is considered the oldest surviving main battery gun from an American battleship. It was originally manufactured in 1898 as a 13-inch Mark II gun with 35 calibers; today, it is no longer in its original configuration. The administration building also deserves attention: completed in 1920, it is the oldest nontechnical building on the base.
Planning Your Visit and Choosing Suitable Accommodation
