History Between Courthouse and River Town

Caroline County can also be explored through its historic sites. Five locations are part of the Virginia Civil War Trails. The Caroline County Courthouse was built in the early 1830s and replaced an earlier courthouse nearby. Old Mansion dates from 1741; during the American Revolutionary War, George Washington and his troops camped on the grounds.

Port Royal was founded in 1744 and largely preserves, within its original boundaries, the character of an early Tidewater river town. The Caroline Historical Society presents exhibitions on the history of Caroline County.
