Waitsfield brings together the Green Mountains and the Mad River with local history, trails, and a museum of industrial design. This gives you several distinct options to consider when planning your trip: a specific route along the Mad River Path, historic sites in the village, or time for a museum, gallery, and seasonal market. Waitsfield’s history dates back to the early 19th century, when the village emerged as a trading center for the rural farming communities of the Mad River Valley.

Trails and Village Sites

The 1.5-mile Mad River Path runs from the Mad River Green Trailhead to the General Wait House, where it ends. Bridge Street Park is also one of the path’s destinations. The park has a municipal beach and a scenic covered bridge, as well as cafés and boutiques. This lets you consider the trail and village destinations as distinct parts of your stay, without needing to combine them into a single outing.

Those interested in local history can find offerings from the Historical Society in Waitsfield: it provides guided tours of historic sites and landmarks in town. Check in advance for a suitable time. For the 1791–1991 bicentennial, the society also created the self-guided “Waitsfield Village Historic District Walking Tour.” Its route ran along Route 100 from the General Wait House to the covered bridge on Bridge Street and back; the tour tells the stories of 19th-century houses.

Industrial Design and Art

The Madsonian Museum of Industrial Design displays more than 2,000 carefully crafted and engineered objects. The collection spans from the early 20th century to the present and includes cars, motorcycles, bicycles, toys, canoes, golf equipment, radios, toasters, and typewriters, among other items. Families may also appreciate the dedicated children’s play area. Check before your visit to see whether it will be available; individual exhibits can change as well.

Artisans’ Gallery in historic Waitsfield offers a different perspective. It works with more than 170 artists from Vermont; the artists involved may change. The gallery is located in a bright, welcoming storefront dating to the 1830s and is owned by four partners who run it together. Together with the museum, it offers a contrast between a large collection of designed everyday objects and a gallery that works with artists from Vermont.

Seasonal Market and Regional Orientation

The Waitsfield Farmers Market is held outdoors on the Mad River Green in downtown, from spring through fall. Local products on offer include honey, mead, coffee, eggs, and cheese. Vendors and products may vary, and market dates change from year to year. If the market is part of your plans, check the dates for your travel period.

For a view beyond town, the 36-mile Mad River Byway connects Waitsfield and Warren, among other places, via Routes 100 and 100B. Together with the Green Mountains and the Mad River as natural features of the area, this offers a different perspective from the individual village destinations: you can focus your plans on Waitsfield’s historic sites and institutions or include the regional route.

Finding the Right Location for Your Stay

If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Waitsfield, first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay: the Mad River Path and village destinations, local history, the museum and gallery, or the seasonal market. If you also want to explore the regional route, you can consider the byway as a separate planning option.
