Bennington Between History and Nature

A striking monument, historic places and varied trails give a stay in Bennington different points of focus. The Bennington Battle Monument is 306 feet and 4½ inches tall. It was completed and dedicated in 1891. Those interested in the town’s history will find a specific point of interest here: the monument commemorates the Battle of Bennington, which took place on August 16, 1777. The date brings the historical connection to life and provides a clear starting point for exploring Bennington with children.

Tours of the Park-McCullough Historic Governor’s Mansion offer a different way to experience history. From May 22 to October 19, 2026, guided and self-guided tours are available there. This gives visitors two different ways to explore during that period. If you like to alternate between guided tours and exploring independently on your outings, you can include the mansion as a separate stop on your itinerary.

Trails and Green Spaces

Mile-Around Woods combines a one-mile walking trail with more than six miles of connected trails. These have been open to the public since the 1980s. This gives you a named shorter route alongside a larger network of trails. When planning your day, you can decide whether to focus on the walking trail or make the connected trails your main destination.

The Bennington Area Trail System (BATS) is a series of trails in Bennington and on Mount Anthony. This location offers another point of reference when choosing activities: both Bennington itself and Mount Anthony are part of the area covered by the trail system. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, consider which of these areas you’d especially like to explore when planning your trip.

Greenberg Headwaters Park covers 168 acres and is within walking distance of downtown Bennington. Its proximity to downtown is a practical factor when getting your bearings in the area. If you include the park in your vacation plans, you can consider it alongside downtown as a reference point for planning your stay. The park is a destination in its own right, alongside the trails at Mile-Around Woods and BATS.

The Henry Bridge, also known as the Burt Bridge, is another named place in Bennington: it crosses the Waloomsac River. If you’re interested in bridges and their role in the local landscape, you can add it as another destination. The Covered Bridge Gallery at the Monument Arts & Cultural Center includes the Lyman Orton Collection, adding an exhibition collection to this subject area.

Explore Culture and Plan Your Stay

Bennington has three historic districts listed on the National Register, one in each of its historic village centers. This extends the historical perspective beyond the Battle Monument to include several village centers. Cultural tourism also includes two walking tours. If you enjoy experiencing culture on a walking tour, these offer another way to give your stay a particular focus.
