Huntsville: History, Art, and Starwalks
Accommodation in Huntsville
Huntsville combines a tangible local history with art, astronomy programs, and activities for different seasons. The Robert F. Aldous Cabin was the first cabin built in Huntsville, in 1861. HALO offers Starwalk tours, and the Ogden Valley Planet Tour begins in downtown Huntsville. Other activities include pickleball, a seasonal ice rink, and winter sports. When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: should local history and culture set the tone, or are sports activities and a specific travel date more important?
History, Art, and Notable Details
The Huntsville History Center has an extensive collection of historical information. The Ogden Valley Branch Library and the David Eccles Community Center jointly house an art gallery with exhibition space for paintings and other artworks. The gallery program may change; if you want to see a particular exhibition, check the current program in advance.
The Shooting Star Saloon also combines a long history with specific food offerings: Since 1879, it has been Utah’s oldest continuously operating saloon. It serves burgers with fries and beer. The Star Burger consists of two beef patties, two slices of cheese, and a grilled Polish sausage. This means local history and a very specific menu offer distinct reasons to explore.
Pickleball, Breaks, and Astronomy Programs
Pickleball is available at two locations with different features: The Hall offers two covered courts for public rental; North Park has three courts. If covered courts and public rentals are important to you, The Hall is the right place to start; North Park offers more courts. Reservation details for The Hall may change, so it’s a good idea to check them before planning a rental. Main Park has two picnic pavilions. Reservation policies may change here, too; check the current terms if you plan to use a pavilion.
HALO offers two different ways to experience its astronomy programs. The Ogden Valley Planet Tour begins with the solar system model on the HALO grounds in downtown Huntsville. Starwalk tours run Monday through Saturday; Sunday tours are available by request. Call ahead for tour times and reservations. The weekly schedule and the option to request a Sunday visit give you concrete points of reference if you want to include this activity in your trip.
Winter Sports and Seasonal Dates
Snowbasin Resort has a Huntsville address and offers ski and snowboard terrain for all skill levels. Huntsville Park also has a seasonal outdoor ice rink. Its operation depends on the weather and the availability of volunteers. So check whether it’s currently open before making the rink a firm part of your plans.
An event date may also be a deciding factor for your trip: The 2026 events page describes the 4th of July Fun Run as a Huntsville family tradition. Check whether the specific date falls within your travel dates; the description refers to the 2026 event year.
Check Visitor Conditions
Huntsville Cemetery is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The recreation fee behind the Forest Service gate is waived for cemetery visitors. Since seasonal gate rules may change, check the conditions before driving there.
The Port Boat Ramp and the Pineview Trailhead (Windsurfer Beach) at Pineview Reservoir are closed through 2026. Take this closure into account when planning, and check access conditions again before driving there.
