Discover Millard County
Accommodation in Millard County
Millard County combines the vastness of the Great Basin with unusually diverse traces of human history. Pahvant Valley occupies most of the southeastern part of the county. It is a broad, arid valley oriented from north to south. Anyone planning a trip that combines landscapes, culture, and varied trails will find different reasons here to choose their vacation rental or vacation home according to their preferred daily rhythm.
Between Pahvant Valley Heritage Trail and the High Desert
The Pahvant Valley Heritage Trail combines driving routes with hiking trails and includes nine cultural and recreational attractions in Millard County. Most access points are located on unpaved roads; four-wheel-drive vehicles are strongly recommended for these areas. This is an important point for your planning if you want to include not only museums and historic sites but also landscapes that feel more remote.
Another way to experience the region actively is the High Desert Trail. It connects Millard County with other counties in western Utah, including Box Elder, Tooele, Juab, Beaver, Iron, and Washington. The trail is suitable for off-road vehicles, mountain bikers, hikers, and horseback riders. This allows you to choose between different modes of transportation when planning your trip without losing sight of the character of the high-desert landscape.
Water, Birds, and a Special Time of Year
Gunnison Bend Reservoir is home to a public park with a boat launch, picnic tables, a covered pavilion, and restrooms. A peninsula extending into the lake prevents large waves from forming, while the shallow water keeps the reservoir warm. These conditions make the site a destination in its own right for a stay by the water, without requiring you to devote your day exclusively to hiking or historic sightseeing.
Clear Lake Bird Refuge lies south of Delta along Route 257. A series of small lakes and ponds is used extensively by migratory waterfowl as well as other birds and animals. Anyone wishing to include nature observation in their trip can combine this aspect of the landscape with the county’s cultural attractions. The Snow Goose Festival provides a distinct seasonal highlight and takes place every February at Gunnison Bend Reservoir.
Places That Bring History to Life
Today, the grounds of the Central Utah Relocation Center, also known as Topaz, preserve two monuments, building foundations, roads, gravel paths, agricultural buildings, sections of the perimeter fence, and landscaped grounds. Through hundreds of artifacts, photographs, and eyewitness accounts, the Topaz Museum conveys the history of the 11,000 people of Japanese ancestry who were interned at Topaz during World War II. The collections also include 150 original works of art.
From 1867 through the early 1880s, Cove Fort was an important station for travelers, the Pony Express, and telegraph lines. Visitors can view the garden, blacksmith shop, corral, barn, and sleeping quarters there. The Great Basin Museum displays regional art, fossils, and history and also presents the history of the Fremont people in the local valleys. During museum hours, it accepts guided tours and visits by special request.
Other historic points of interest include the Territorial Statehouse State Park Museum, located in Utah’s oldest surviving government building, and Fort Deseret. There, you can explore the remains of the enclosing walls and restored structures. Fort Deseret is also the only surviving example of the many adobe forts built in Utah.
Choosing Accommodation Based on Your Travel Plan
There is also plenty to discover outside Pahvant Valley. The West Desert Trails in the western half of Millard County include roads and trails leading to caves, rock formations, and wildlife-viewing areas. Many sections of the Paiute ATV Trail run through the mountainous eastern area of Fish Lake National Forest, including numerous sections within Millard County.
The Meadow Hot Springs area has three different hot springs. The clear, calm water is about 100 degrees Fahrenheit and is home to warm-water fish. Meadow Hot Springs is privately owned; this information is therefore part of careful trip planning. When searching for a vacation rental or vacation home in Millard County, you can consider whether you want to focus primarily on culture, water, birdwatching, historic sites, or extensive trails. For further orientation within the area, you can also include Scipio.
