Young: Water, History and Culture
Accommodation in Young
In Young, travel ideas range from Lake Graham and the history of Fort Belknap to cultural venues and events. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Young, start by considering what you want your stay to focus on: days by the water, historical discoveries, or a program of art, movies and local events.
Lake Graham: Water, Fishing and Camping
Lake Graham is on Salt Creek in Young County, five miles north of Graham on US 380. Three public boat ramps, a fishing pier and a picnic area offer different ways to spend a day by the water. There are also sites for both primitive and improved camping. Fishing for hybrid striped bass and white bass is rated as good; conditions may change with the season and water level.
It’s also worth checking the specific camping options: Eddleman Park offers overnight camping with ten tent sites and twelve RV sites. Check reservations and fees again before your arrival. Firemen’s Park offers a different set of amenities: a playground, dog park, disc golf course, picnic tables and the Addie Pavilion. So, alongside the lake, the park offers another way to enjoy some downtime.
Traces of Young County History
Fort Belknap was the northern anchor of a series of U.S. Army forts that stretched from the Red River to the Rio Grande. One of the original structures is the Old Fort Belknap Powder Magazine, the best-preserved of these buildings. Another historical connection dates to 1851, when a military road ran between Fort Belknap and Fort Worth. The arch of the courthouse built in 1884 still stands at the site of the Third County Courthouse.
The county’s many historical markers also offer a way to explore its history: 50 sites in Young County are marked, including five national historic sites. The Historic Walking and Driving Tour presents Graham’s history through cowboys, Indigenous peoples, oil and ranching. Confirm its availability before your trip. Those interested in local history, art and culture can also visit The Old Post, which is wheelchair accessible. The Young County Museum of History & Culture is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check its hours again before your visit.
A prominent memorial is the Young County Veterans Memorial: a seven-foot-tall red granite star bears the names of 157 men and women from Young County who died while serving their country since World War I. The largest oak tree in Young County stands at Atwood Ranch. Visits to the ranch attraction can be arranged by appointment.
Culture, Movies and Events
The National Theatre dates back to 1919 and shows first-run movies on three different screens. Movie listings and operating details may change, so check the information before your visit. Graham Memorial Auditorium is an active Art Deco theater for performing arts, dance and symphony orchestra music. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra has performed there annually since 1947.
Graham Drive-In Theatre is also part of the region’s movie history: it is one of the few drive-in theaters still operating in Texas. Confirm its operating status before your arrival. For events, the Young County Arena’s Main Arena offers a clear sense of scale: it measures 150 by 250 feet and seats 2,500 people.
The Food Truck Championship of Texas takes place in Graham every year. Participants compete in a culinary contest for a top prize of $10,000; prize money may change from one edition to another. Dates, vendors and event details may also vary. For Possum Pedal 2026, the route options include 6-, 27-, 40-, 55- and 70-mile routes through Young County; later editions may offer different routes.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay
When looking for a vacation rental in Young, the kind of trip you have in mind is a helpful starting point. Will Lake Graham, with its boating, fishing and camping, be the main draw, or are you more interested in Fort Belknap, historical sites and cultural venues? An annual event could also shape your plans. Choose based on which of these experiences matters most for your trip.
