Alba: Lake Fork and Railroad History
Accommodation in Alba
Alba is located near the shores of Lake Fork Reservoir; at the same time, railroads, coal mining, and early telegraphy tell the story of the town. Two travel interests come together here: outdoor recreation around the lake and historical discoveries in a town whose past was shaped by transportation and communication.
Lake Fork and Outdoor Recreation
Alba offers easy access to outdoor activities. In the area around Alba, there are four public boat ramps on Lake Fork and a free day-use area. These represent two different ways to spend time at the lake: boating via public ramps and a day visit to a free area. If you make Lake Fork the focus of your trip, you can include these options in your plans and enjoy Alba as a nearby town with outdoor recreation.
Railroads and Coal: A Town’s History in Stages
The railroad history includes several clearly dated periods. In 1881, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad passed through Alba. On February 28, 1901, the Texas Short Line Railway Company received a charter providing for the construction and operation of a railroad from Grand Saline to a connection with the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company of Texas near Alba. The Texas Short Line Railway was built in 1902–03 to transport coal from Alba and Hoyt to Grand Saline. The ten-mile section between Alba and Grand Saline was abandoned in 1959.
For historical context, it is useful to distinguish between the two: the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad passed through Alba, while the Texas Short Line was designed to transport coal from Alba and Hoyt to Grand Saline. Mining is also one of the subjects that helps place Alba in time: lignite was discovered in the area around 1900; by 1911, five mines there were producing 40,000 tons of coal per month.
Early Telegraphy
Telegraphy can also be understood through two specific details. A telegraph office was among the earliest services to arrive in the community of Alba. One of the first telegraph reports received in Alba announced the assassination of President James Garfield. Thus, alongside coal transportation and railroad development, the transmission of news is also part of the town’s history.
Which Travel Focus Suits Your Vacation Rental?
When choosing a vacation rental in Alba, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip. If outdoor recreation and Lake Fork are priorities, the lake, boat ramps, and day-use area offer concrete points of reference. If you are more interested in the town’s past, railroads, coal mining, and telegraphy provide other themes to explore. For a family trip, comparing the options can make planning easier: What are your fellow travelers most interested in? Then match the location of the specific property to your planned priorities.
