Hutto combines a historic downtown with parks, trails, and unusual local stories. Those looking for a vacation rental or holiday home for a varied stay will find a range of possibilities here: Old Town tells the story of the area’s agricultural past, while parks, a lake, an outdoor amphitheater, and a network of trails provide space to create your own daily plans. Hutto is also connected to the Austin area via SH 130 and U.S. 79.

Old Town and Hutto’s Agricultural Heritage

Hutto’s Old Town is a historic district. It is roughly bounded by Park Street to the east, Orgain Street to the south, the Co-Op property to the west, and the area north of the intersection of Church Street and FM 1660 to the north. Restored historic buildings from the 19th century are considered examples of the Swedish farming community that founded Hutto in 1911. The Hutto Commercial Historic District is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Hutto Co-Op also represents this agricultural history; it was organized and built starting in 1937. Today, the site known as The Gin is home to the Hutto Co-Op District, a 35-acre destination for commercial, retail, entertainment, and residential uses. The restaurants and shops in Old Town are accessible on foot or by car. Old Tyme Days celebrates Hutto’s agricultural heritage in the town’s historic center. A weekly farmers market is also held in the renovated cotton gin.

Trails, Water, and Green Spaces

Hutto’s park system comprises 165 acres of parkland and an eight-mile network of scenic trails. For a specific trail plan, consider the Cottonwood Trail: the approximately 3.2-mile trail begins in Fritz Park and connects it with Creekside Park. Creekside Park extends Fritz Park within the City of Hutto’s trail network.

Hutto Lake Park offers a different focus. It features walking trails and a lake where catch-and-release fishing is permitted. Adam Orgain Park lies along Brushy Creek and is named after the first settler of the Hutto community. The Brushy Creek Amphitheater is an outdoor, open-air venue there and hosts events in a natural setting. The park is also the venue for Hutto’s Fourth of July celebration and other community events.

Unique Stories and Local Events

Among Hutto’s distinctive features are concrete hippopotamuses displayed throughout the community in various sizes and designs. Hutto’s best-known local hippo legend tells of a circus train stopping in 1915, during which a hippopotamus escaped to Cottonwood Creek. Those looking for creative activities in addition to historic sites can include The Curious Hippo, with workshops, readings, gatherings, and special events, in their plans. Glenwood Splash Pad is open seasonally from May 1 to October 1.

The Right Base for Your Trip

When choosing your vacation rental, you can consider which aspects of Hutto you want to focus on: Old Town and local history, walking trails and park landscapes, or events and distinctive local stories. The connection via the toll road system also provides a practical foundation for plans in the Austin area, without every trip having to follow the same itinerary.
