In Lynn County, you’ll encounter natural lakes, nearly level terrain, and stories of historic trails and ranching. Topics range from water sources and landscapes to museums and local architecture. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering whether you’d rather focus on the lakes, Tahoka’s history, or O'Donnell as well.

Lakes and Landscapes Around Tahoka

Tahoka Lake, also called Lake Tahoka, is a natural, spring-fed body of water three miles northeast of Tahoka in northeastern Lynn County. Its bed sometimes dries up, so check the current water level before visiting. Double Lakes are two medium-sized natural lakes seven miles northwest of Tahoka, in the western part of the county. Farther west lie Twin Lakes, a pair of small natural lakes ten miles from Tahoka. Guthrie Lake is located three miles southwest of Tahoka in central Lynn County.

The bodies of water vary in size and location: Double Lakes are medium-sized, Twin Lakes are small, and Guthrie Lake can also be described by its shoreline. It is about a mile long; its steep banks consist of sandy clay loam soils, where many tall grasses grow. Across Lynn County’s 915 square miles, nearly level terrain is marked by scattered depressions and playa basins. These landscape features give the area a character different from that of a single, clearly defined lakeshore.

When looking for a vacation rental in Lynn County, Tahoka can serve as a reference point on the map: the distances to the lakes listed above are measured from there. Consider which landscape destinations matter most for your trip, and compare their locations with your other plans. This can help you choose the area you want more precisely, without treating the different lakes as a single destination.

Historic Trails and Stories

The Spanish Explorers' Route was a prehistoric road used by Indigenous people, Spaniards, U.S. Army units, and cattle drivers. Its recorded sequence runs from Gholson Spring to Tahoka Lake and onward to Tobacco Creek, Big Spring, and the North Concho. Tahoka Lake was also a watering place along routes used by those same four groups. Together, these place references tell the story of a landscape that served as a trail and a water source in different historical contexts.

Military history is also associated with specific places and dates. Four soldiers died in the 1877 Buffalo Soldiers tragedy in Lynn County; among them was Private John T. Gordon, who is buried at Double Lakes. After leaving Double Lake, Company A of the 10th Cavalry spent 86 hours without water. The blizzard of December 4, 1874, associated with the Site of Mackenzie Cavalry Camp, forced two companies of the U.S. 4th Cavalry to spend the night there without wood, water, or grass for their horses.

The T-Bar Ranch is also part of the county’s history. From the 1890s onward, it was central to the county’s economy; at its peak, it was among the largest ranches on the South Plains. It consisted of three work areas of roughly equal size: Three Lakes, Guthrie Lake, and Double Lakes. These names link the history of the ranch with places that also appear in the county’s landscape and stories.

Museums and Architecture in Tahoka

The Tahoka Pioneer Museum presents the history of Lynn County through donated artifacts and photographs. A 23-foot-long diorama by artist Bill Craig depicts a Comanche camp at Tahoka Lake in the 1850s. The exhibits described also include a photograph of a cowboy “stag dance” connected with a cattle drive or cattle roundup. Museum exhibits may change, so check what’s currently on display before visiting.

The Lynn County Courthouse in Tahoka offers another perspective on history. The three-story building dates to 1916, is designed in the Classical Revival style, and has a full basement. Its architecture provides a concrete counterpoint to the stories of trails, lakes, and ranching: here, the focus is on a public building with a clearly documented date and architectural style.

O'Donnell and Local History

O'Donnell also brings its own historical themes to the story of the county. The Farmer’s Coop Gin in O'Donnell was the first automated cotton gin in North America. The O'Donnell Heritage Museum prominently highlights the town’s connection to Dan Blocker, the actor who played Hoss Cartwright in the television series “Bonanza.” A bronze bust of Blocker stands in a park across from the museum. These different connections make O'Donnell a distinct destination for travelers interested in local industrial and cultural history as well as lakes and ranching history.

Getting Around and When to Visit

U.S. Highways 87 and 380 intersect in Tahoka. The county’s railroad history can also be placed in context: in 1909–1910, the Santa Fe extended a branch line from Lubbock through Slaton to Tahoka and Lamesa. These historical details help explain Tahoka’s role in local and transportation history; they do not describe a current train service.

The Lynn County Harvest Festival in Tahoka features food, games, and shopping. A description from September 2021 noted that, at the time, the festival had been held every fall for 45 years. The activities mentioned belong to that 2021 description; confirm current dates and offerings before planning a visit around them.
