Several houses and churches also bring Liberty's architectural history to life. Built in 1931 in the Modernist style, the Liberty County Courthouse is made of limestone and decorated with aluminum and stone ornamentation. The Norman House illustrates a simplified, single-story expression of Greek Revival architecture. It features exhibits in a historic residence as well as public tours by appointment with at least two weeks' advance notice.

Built in 1848, the Gillard-Duncan House is one of the oldest surviving houses in Southeast Texas. Its design is strongly influenced by Creole architecture; the upper floor contains a schoolroom. Due to renovation work, the house is temporarily closed to the public. St. Stephen's Episcopal Church is a single-story wood-frame structure with an attached bell tower and retains most of its original architectural features. An official Texas Historical Marker has identified the church since 1977. Tours are available by appointment with at least two weeks' advance notice.

Trails, Water, and Nature Observation

For active days, the Knobby Knees Trailhead offers a nine-mile trail network with views of Palmer Bayou, two backwaters, and the Trinity River. The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge has approximately 37 miles of unpaved trails spread across ten day-use areas. At the Champion Lake Day Use Area, possible activities include hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, boating, and fishing. Champion Lake is also a popular kayaking spot.

Liberty Municipal Park has approximately two miles of paved trails for cycling, hiking, running, or walking. A three-acre stocked pond provides another opportunity for fishing. The park is also suitable for birdwatching; a small pond attracts herons and egrets. Those who would also like to include golf in their plans will find a publicly accessible 120-acre, nine-hole course at Liberty Municipal Golf Course. The grounds also include a catch-and-release fishing pond.

Events and Seasonal Sightings

The Liberty Jubilee is a family-friendly festival held around Liberty's historic downtown. It usually takes place on the fourth weekend of March each year and has continued since 1986, when it began as part of the Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration. The program includes food vendors, arts and crafts, live entertainment, children's games, and amusement rides. If you are traveling for this occasion, you should take the date into account when choosing your accommodation.

From late March to mid-August, visitors in Liberty can also look out for swallow-tailed kites. This seasonal nature feature complements the year-round cultural, park, and landscape experiences that can be planned in different ways with a clearly defined observation period.
