The vegetation of the High Plains in Floyd County includes medium-short to tall grasses and mesquite. The White River and Blanco Canyon divide the southern part of the county. Other attractions include a museum with genealogical records, a historic home in the Pueblo Revival style, and a trailway that passes through several counties and the Clarity Tunnel. Floyd County can be explored through its landscapes, local history and diverse experiences.

Landscape and Clarity Tunnel

The Caprock Canyons Trailway runs through Floyd, Briscoe and Hall counties and passes through the Clarity Tunnel. The tunnel also has a distinctive seasonal natural history: in summer, it is home to a colony of up to half a million Mexican free-tailed bats. The trailway and the summer colony offer two different ways to experience the area: one is a specific route through several counties, the other a seasonal nature experience. If you include the trailway in your plans, you can check current route information before your visit.

Discoveries and architectural history

The Floyd County Museum houses exhibits and genealogical records for Floyd County, Texas. It is located in the Surginer Hardware Store building near the town square. Artifacts on display include finds from the 1540 Coronado expedition, discovered at the Jimmy Owens Site in Blanco Canyon. Recovered evidence and artifacts supported the theory that Coronado traveled through Blanco Canyon.

The Zimmerman House also offers a tangible connection to the county’s architectural history: it is a Texas Historic Landmark listed in 1990 and designed in the Pueblo Revival style. Hand-hewn beams, vigas and columns define its architecture. The Battle of Blanco Canyon is described as one of the most decisive engagements in the U.S. Cavalry’s campaigns against the Comanche. Together, the museum, the house and the historical context tell different chapters of the region’s history.

Traces of the past in Floydada and Della Plain

Della Plain was founded in 1887 and developed into an early agricultural center for the region. In 1890, Floydada was designated the county seat of Floyd County. Four years later, all that remained of Della Plain was the community cemetery. The First Baptist Church of Floydada was organized in 1891; Methodist roots in the county date back to the 1880s. Individual buildings also tell the story of later periods: the First National Bank of Floydada has occupied its current location since 1912, and the Commercial Hotel in Floydada opened in January 1913 with 21 guest rooms.

Ranch experience and a place to stay

Assiter Punkin Ranch offers a mini petting zoo with horses, donkeys, dogs, goats and a cat. Farm tours are also available; seasonal details may vary. Animals and farm tours offer a different focus from the museum collections, architectural history or trailway-related experiences.

When looking for a vacation rental or holiday home in Floyd County, it’s worth starting with a question about your priorities: Would you like to focus mainly on museums, architecture and historic sites, or are you more interested in the landscape, trailway and ranch?
