Odessa combines historic homes and presidential history with art, theater and a natural experience at Meteor Crater. These themes offer different highlights: sometimes the focus is on the pioneer and oil-boom eras, sometimes on presidential history, American art or meteorites. For people traveling together with different interests, this variety offers several ways to shape a stay.

Historic Homes and Presidential History

The Historic White-Pool House was built in 1887 and restored to its original condition. The restored Victorian farmhouse embodies Odessa’s pioneer and oil-boom eras. Its rooms contain exhibits from earlier times and family heirlooms. The house’s architecture and furnishings therefore offer two connected perspectives: its own past and the objects that bring that history to life.

The restored Parker House Museum focuses on the Parker family and the history of ranching. Period furnishings and exhibits illustrate both themes. Along with the White-Pool House, it offers another way to explore the region’s past, this time centered on family history and ranching.

The Presidential Museum is one of the few museums devoted exclusively to the US presidency. Its Hall of Presidents chronicles the lives and work of all presidents, including the presidents of the Republic of Texas and the Confederate States. The museum grounds also include the restored and furnished 1940s family home of George H. W. Bush, Barbara Bush and George W. Bush. The exhibit and the house have different focuses: one explores presidential history broadly, while the other presents a specific family history.

Art, Theater and Events

The Ellen Noël Art Museum has three galleries featuring American art from the 1850s to the present. This broad span brings together older art and works from the recent past and present. Art enthusiasts will find a different thematic perspective here than in the historic homes.

The Globe Theater at Odessa College is a 410-seat venue for theatrical performances and community events. Its annual season includes student and community productions, as well as concerts and special events. If you would like to make an event a set part of your stay, check the event schedule when planning.

Odessa’s cultural attractions also include an unusual structure: UT Permian Basin Stonehenge is a replica of Stonehenge built in 2004 by members of the university’s Art Department. Its story takes you from historic homes and collections to a university art project.

Meteor Crater and Odessa’s Trail Network

At Odessa Meteor Crater, a short walk offers a chance to see meteorites and enjoy nature. A nature trail with partly paved sections runs directly through the center of the crater; the self-guided walk takes 5 to 10 minutes. The Odessa Meteor Crater Museum displays meteorites from Odessa, as well as specimens from Argentina, China, Russia, Africa and Australia. The exhibit features finds from several parts of the world, while the trail leads directly through the center of the crater.

The crater is also home to wildlife including bobcats, badgers, ground squirrels, burrowing owls, coyotes, rabbits, deer, Texas horned lizards and jackrabbits. All wildlife within the enclosure is protected. Beyond the crater, Odessa’s trail network also offers residents and visitors safe, accessible opportunities for outdoor activities, including walking, running and cycling.

Experiences as a Guide to Choosing Accommodation

Odessa promotes cultural tourism to its museums and other historic sites by participating in Texas Historical Commission initiatives in the Pecos Heritage Trail Region. When looking for a vacation rental, you can start by considering which themes you want to shape your stay: historic homes and presidential history, art and live performances, or Meteor Crater with its trail, museum and natural surroundings. This lets you choose accommodation based on the experiences that interest you, without assuming a particular location or connection between the individual sites.
