Castro County in the Texas Panhandle offers a rural landscape and history that can be read in its landmarks. Seasonal changes in fields and pastures stand alongside buildings and memorial sites with very different stories. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are especially interested in architecture, agriculture, or historical events.

A Landscape in Tune with the Seasons

Depending on the season, green pastures with wheat, snow-white cotton, and golden-yellow corn shape the view across Castro County. Cattle and horses are also part of the landscape. Cattle, cotton, and corn define the rural character of this Texas Panhandle county; the colors of the fields change with the seasons. Those who enjoy taking a close look at landscapes will find a different scene here from one that remains uniform throughout.

The area around Nazareth is considered prairie. Apart from trees planted by people, there are few other trees there. When looking for a vacation rental, you can first consider whether the rural surroundings or the historic sites are the main reason for your trip.

Architecture and Early County History

In Dimmitt stands the Castro County Courthouse, built in 1939 with funding from the federal Public Works Administration. It was designed by the Amarillo architectural firm Townes & Funk; the building is considered an example of the Modern Classical style. In 2026, the courthouse became the first property in Castro County to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Dimmitt’s town square also reaches back to the county’s beginnings: it was laid out in 1891, the year Castro County was formally established. The Gilbreath-Cowsert House in Dimmitt offers another perspective on the area’s architectural history. Built in 1909, the house is considered a good example of an early-20th-century vernacular residence. Together, the courthouse and the house represent different architectural characterizations; the town square anchors them in the history of the county’s founding.

Nazareth: Community, Commerce, and Tradition

Holy Family Catholic Church in Nazareth was built in 1903. At Holy Family Cemetery, the Jerusalem Oratory serves as a place of worship for visitors and provides information about the cemetery. The site thus combines a specific building history with its religious and commemorative function.

Nazareth’s commercial history is also documented: beginning in 1905, residents bought goods at Home Mercantile for 90 years. According to the 2022 program, the German Sausage Festival in Nazareth included an arts and crafts show and a German sausage meal. These program details refer to the 2022 edition; they do not indicate dates for later events.

World War II Memorial Sites

The Castro County Museum houses historic agricultural equipment in two World War II barracks. The barracks were moved from a prisoner-of-war camp near Hereford, 20 miles away. Former prisoners of war who later revisited the site donated mementos and letters to the museum. Agricultural objects and personal accounts offer two different ways to explore the past here.

The camp’s chapel preserves another memory of the prisoner-of-war era: it was built by prisoners and is the only building from that time still standing at the site. The history commemorated by the Dimmitt Trail Arrow is distinct from this: it represents the presence of the Comanche and other Indigenous peoples of the Plains before the arrival of settlers. The county’s historical themes thus reach far beyond a single era.

Experiences to Help Plan Your Trip

Dimmitt Splash Park is a 4,000-square-foot community facility that can be used free of charge. As operating information may change, check before visiting. This allows you to include the facility in your plans without conflating it with the historical sites.

When choosing a vacation rental in Castro County, one simple priority can help: should your trip focus mainly on the history of Dimmitt’s buildings, the prairie and agricultural landscape, or the memorial sites? These themes offer different reasons to explore the county. If you would like to explore the area further, you can also find Dimmitt and Hart here.
