Anyone looking to combine a trip focused on local history, landscapes, and community-oriented attractions will find a destination with an unusually rich shared past. When choosing a vacation rental or holiday home, the most important consideration is whether you want to focus on parks, historic sites, or the history of the settlements along Military Road.
Ranch History and Established Place Names
The history of La Encantada dates back to a land grant: San Pedro de Carricitos was granted to Pedro Villarreal in 1781 for services rendered to the Spanish Crown. The original settlement of La Encantada was located on higher ground. It was bordered by the Rio Grande to the south and surrounded by an estero, an old river channel. The name La Encantada comes from a grove of sabino trees, also known as jupiter trees, which were considered enchanted.
An important period in local development began in 1910. At that time, the residents of La Encantada Ranch moved about half a mile north along Military Road and called the new ranch El Ranchito. Ranchito also emerged in the early 20th century as a flag stop without a permanent platform after the St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway built a branch line from Harlingen to Brownsville. By 1970, Ranchito had about 100 homes, a cemetery, and a church.
The history of education is also part of the local history along Military Road. The ranches of El Calaboz, El Naranjo, La Paloma, Las Flores, and El Ranchito each had a one-room school along Military Road. El Naranjo, El Ranchito, and El Calaboz later decided to consolidate their schools on a shared campus. La Encantada School was named in honor of La Encantada Ranch. Local church history includes St. Ignatius of Loyola Church in El Ranchito, which was founded in 1967. One of the simple small chapels in El Ranchito is given particular prominence.
Parks and Historic Landmarks
For a varied day of activities, Don Jose Esparza Park is a practical place to start. The neighborhood park has an outdoor pool, a basketball court, picnic tables, and shade trees. This allows you to combine time outdoors with an exploration of local history without making your trip exclusively about historical topics.
El Ranchito Community Park is located at 24133 Zapotec Street in San Benito, Texas 78586. Esparza-Domanski Community Park is located in Colonia El Ranchito at the intersection of FM 1577 and U.S. Highway 281.
Several cemeteries preserve different chapters of the region’s collective memory. Esparza Cemetery preserves the burial history of members of the Esparza family, Mexican American pioneers, as well as local civic and political leaders, law enforcement officers, and Texas Rangers. Its historic marker is located in Ranchito at the intersection of Military Highway, also known as U.S. 281, and Encantada Circle. Old Garcia Cemetery is located 0.6 miles west of FM 1577 in El Ranchito, off Military Highway 281 and 0.25 miles south of U.S. 281 on an unpaved road. El Calaboz Cemetery is located off Military Highway 281 between the communities of La Paloma and El Ranchito.

Travelers with different interests can combine Don Jose Esparza Park with the cultural landmarks.
