Lockhart also brings together a range of interests. The city maintains nine municipal parks totaling 136.45 acres. Lockhart: Park Trails and Architectural History
Lockhart State Park is located within the city of Lockhart in Caldwell County. Its 263 acres lie in the Blackland Prairie ecoregion. Hiking and biking trails include the Clear Fork Trail and the Persimmon Trail. The park also has a nine-hole golf course built with support from the Works Progress Administration.
Luling: Paddling and a Summer Tradition
The Zedler Mill Paddling Trail runs for six miles along the San Marcos River. Allow about two to four hours to travel it by boat. It is described as the first inland paddling trail in its network. In Luling, the Zedler Mill was built in 1874 as a community gristmill; it is the only surviving example of its kind. The route and the mill’s history offer two different ways to experience Luling: an activity on the river and a historic structure.
The Luling Watermelon Thump has been a summer tradition since 1954. Competitions include seed-spitting, watermelon-eating and growing prize-winning watermelons. Luling is also at the intersection of US 90, US 183, Texas 80, Texas 86 and Interstate 10. If you’re weighing Lockhart and Luling as a base, you can consider whether the courthouse, parks and barbecue or the paddling trail and festival traditions should take up more of your trip plans.
The Luling Foundation was established in 1927 by Edgar B. Davis. Its purpose was to promote agricultural diversity and improve life for farm and ranch families in Caldwell, Gonzales and Guadalupe Counties. This regional connection complements the landmarks and activities with a perspective on agriculture and rural life.
