Surfside Beach combines a four-mile coastline with protected dunes, diverse birdlife, waterways and prominent traces of Texas history. Those planning a trip with varied interests will find several distinct focal points here: beach and jetty, nature observation, fishing, cycling and historical discoveries. When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worth deciding first how you want to spend your days.

Experience the Coast and Dunes Mindfully

The shoreline of Surfside Beach along the Intracoastal Waterway forms the southern boundary of the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. It is an important habitat for birds on the Texas Gulf Coast. Overall, Surfside Beach’s diverse habitats provide space for more than 300 resident and migratory bird species. Along Bluewater Highway, brown pelicans, gulls, terns, herons, egrets, avocets, shorebirds and magnificent frigatebirds can be seen throughout the year.

For nature observation, there is the 2.5-mile Surfside Bird & Butterfly Trail. Native plants and donated benches shape the route; observations can be recorded with eBird and iNaturalist. Projects to restore the dunes and plant native grasses and flowers along the Crabbing Pier are also part of the landscape. The protected dunes may not be driven on, parked on or entered on foot, and should not be disturbed.

Active Days on the Water

The Bluewater Highway Trail runs from the main entrance at the intersection of Highway 332 and Bluewater to the edge of town. It is suitable for walks, golf cart rides, cycling and jogging. For a different view of the coast, the Surfside Jetty extends more than half a mile into the water; its level walkway is approximately five feet above the water. Surfside Beach also offers wade fishing in the shoreline area, fishing from the shore and fishing from the long jetty.

The surf is also part of the character of the place. It works in small swells and withstands waves of at least double-overhead height. On a summer evening, you can go crabbing at the Surfside Beach Crabbing Pier or on the beach. Surfside Beach is also described as one of the region’s focal points for shell hunting. These varied opportunities make the town interesting for trips where peaceful nature observation and active hours on the water go hand in hand.

Historic Places and Local Gathering Spots

The Fort Velasco Discovery Center, with its exhibits, is located above Surfside Beach’s town hall. The center includes a palisade with murals depicting local history and the Battle of Fort Velasco Monument. The Fort Velasco Timeline Circle roughly corresponds to the size and location of the original Fort Velasco from 1832. Surfside Beach also hosts an annual reenactment of the signing of the Treaties of Velasco on May 14, 1836.

For trip planning, the boat ramp on Thunder Road can also serve as a separate point of reference: it leads directly into the Freeport Channel and has public restrooms as well as a station for gutting and cleaning fish. Stahlman Park provides a beach setting for weddings, receptions, private events, conferences, family reunions and community events. The Surfside Beach Crabbing Pier is on the other side of the highway, opposite Stahlman Park at 2211 Bluewater Highway.

What to Consider When Choosing a Location

If you want to drive or park on the beach, a valid beach permit must be visibly displayed. Areas where driving on the beach is permitted are located east of Highway 332. Those who primarily want to plan around dunes, birdwatching or history can instead choose their accommodation based on these interests and their preferred daily structure, without combining the different locations into a single circular route. A beach wheelchair, also called a Mobi-Chair, is available through the town hall to make beach access easier for visitors.

For further trip planning, you can also explore Oyster Creek, Lake Jackson, Manvel, Jones Creek, Freeport, Angleton, Clute and Pearland.
