Scott County combines impressive river landscapes, active outdoor experiences, and unusually vivid insights into the region’s history. Angel Falls, a Class IV rapid, lies on the Big South Fork River. Scott State Forest is completely surrounded by the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Those looking to combine nature, activity, and culture will therefore find a variety of starting points for planning their trip here.

Nature Experiences Between the River Corridor and Trails

Scott State Forest can be reached via Leatherwood Ford Road, also known as Highway 297, as well as via connecting county roads. The John Muir Trail runs along the river corridor on the eastern side of the forest.

The North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area also extends across Scott County and four other counties in eastern Tennessee. Wildlife viewing, camping, OHV trails, and hiking opportunities are among the recreational activities offered there. Brimstone Recreation has more than 300 miles of OHV trails and roads and encompasses 20,000 acres in Scott County with ATV trails and other recreational opportunities. Every person who uses the riding trails at Brimstone Recreation, including passengers, must have a valid land-use permit. You should take this requirement into account when planning an active day.

History Made Visible in Buildings

The Museum of Scott County is located on the grounds of Scott County High School in Huntsville and includes more than a dozen wooden and stone buildings. The exhibits trace the history of Scott County from prehistoric times to the present and reflect early life in Appalachia, with its joys and hardships. The entire museum complex was built, operated, and maintained by students of Scott County High School under the guidance of the teaching staff.

The museum complex also includes Frontier Village. Several buildings were relocated from various places in or near Scott County. Another building recreates the grandfather’s law office from 1907. There you will find original photographs, office furnishings, and an interactive family-tree program. For families who enjoy exploring historical topics through tangible rooms and objects, this part of the visit offers an accessible way to connect with the past.
