Montgomery combines nature experiences, riverside landscapes and vivid history to create a diverse travel destination. Here, you can choose between paved paths, natural areas, museums, historic sites and activities on the Cumberland River. This makes it easy to tailor your search for a holiday apartment or holiday home to your preferred vacation focus: peaceful days in nature, cultural discoveries or active excursions by bicycle and on the water.

Nature and Trails for Active Vacation Days

The 144-acre Dunbar Cave natural area offers a first opportunity to experience the landscape of Montgomery County. Rotary Park also covers more than 111 acres. Its character is defined by scenic paths, natural areas and opportunities for outdoor activities. Those who enjoy combining nature with a visit can find a museum and event venue with a nature discovery area for children at the Wade Bourne Nature Center.

The 9-mile Clarksville Greenway is ideal for longer excursions. The fully paved trail runs along a former railway line and can be used for cycling, skating, running and walking. Along the route are streams, rocky outcrops, native wildflowers and trees. A scenic bridge and wide-ranging views provide additional highlights. Take the length of the Greenway into account when planning your day if you want to combine different activities.

The 2-mile RiverWalk offers a different perspective. It follows the Cumberland River and connects downtown with the river. Activities on the Cumberland River include kayaking, canoeing, boating, water skiing and tubing. When planning your accommodation, you can therefore decide whether trails, culture or water sports should be the focus of your trip without structuring every day in the same way.

Experience History and Culture Vividly

The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center is partly housed in a historic building dating from 1898. It was originally built as a Federal Post Office and Customs House. Historic Collinsville includes a 40-acre pioneer settlement and the Weakley House Museum. A self-guided audio tour leads visitors through 16 restored log cabins and outbuildings in an open-air setting. The Weakley House Museum also preserves the couple’s extensive collections and the stories associated with them.

Fort Defiance is located on a 200-foot-high bluff above the confluence of the Red River and Cumberland River. The outer earthworks, powder magazine and gun platforms are still clearly visible. Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center offers free group tours and excursions. The L&N Train Station also tells the story of the area’s development: the Louisville and Nashville Railroad built it at its present location in 1882. Sevier Station is considered the oldest standing structure in Montgomery County.

The African American Legacy Trail runs through Montgomery County and conveys the far-reaching and unique history of Clarksville’s African American community. For visitors who want to learn about historic sites from different perspectives, this trail adds another cultural dimension to the museums and sites.

Events and Experiences with Children

The Roxy Regional Theatre presents theatrical productions ranging from classic works to new plays. Since 1985, it has also offered matinee performances aligned with the curricula of K–12 schools. The Tennessee Wings of Liberty Museum focuses on interactive and immersive exhibits for visitors of all ages. Together with the nature discovery area at the Wade Bourne Nature Center, these offer various options for days centered on culture and engaging learning.

The Clarksville Downtown Market is a seasonal meeting place. Since its founding in 2009, it has brought local farmers and artisans together with local buyers every Saturday from May through October. Downtown Commons also hosts a wide range of events and activities for cultural and recreational purposes. When planning your trip, check the dates you are considering if you want to include the market in your excursion plans.
