Only – Music, Nature and History in Tennessee
Accommodation in Only
Only, Tennessee, combines immersive musical experiences with nature and a historic site of particular significance. When planning your trip, the offerings at Wooten Woods Retreat and the Victor Wooten’s Center for Music and Nature are the main highlights. The experience is complemented by the Duck River and the nearby Lee and Gould Furnace. Depending on whether you are looking for shared music-making, nature observation, or history, you can shape your stay in different ways.
Music and Nature at Wooten Woods Retreat
The Vix Camps take place at Wooten Woods Retreat in Only, Tennessee. The grounds cover nearly 150 acres and border the Duck River. This brings together two clearly recognisable focal points in the travel experience: musical practice and a natural setting. The Music/Nature Camp lasts six days and is open to musicians of all instruments, musical styles, and skill levels. The programme combines music instruction with nature education.
Shorter formats are also part of the programme. Jam Camp is designed as a two-day camp and includes several jam sessions. You decide how intensively you want to participate: attendees can take part in more or fewer sessions, as they choose. For a trip involving different interests, this format therefore offers a different schedule from the six-day Music/Nature Camp.
Those who want to explore the natural side in greater depth will find another option in the Animal Tracking programme. Together with Victor Wooten, participants learn the basics of tracking. The focus is on tracks and other signs found in Wooten Woods. This allows you to plan your trip with a stronger emphasis either on music or on the connection between music and nature.
Venues and Travel Planning
When choosing a holiday apartment or other accommodation in Only, the relevant venue is initially the most important point of reference. The Vix Camps are associated with Wooten Woods Retreat. The Inside:Outside Retreat, on the other hand, takes place at the Victor Wooten’s Center for Music and Nature in Only, Tennessee. This summer camp is aimed at saxophonists aged 17 to over 70. In 2026, it was held for the eighth time.
For most camps, the Vix Camps offer a paid shuttle from Nashville International Airport (BNA) to the venue and back. If you are travelling by air, you can take this into account when organising your stay.
History around Only
The Lee and Gould Furnace is located in the area around Only. It was built in 1833 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The furnace is privately owned, but it can be seen from I-40 at the Bucksnort exit on TN Highway 230. Today, only a small remnant of the historic structure remains.
The site lies along the route of Benge’s Trail of Tears. In 1838, a group of 1,200 Cherokee passed near the Lee and Gould Furnace. This connection gives the surrounding area a historical dimension that clearly differs from the music and nature camps. Those who do not want to focus their stay exclusively on a camp can therefore also include the region’s history in their travel plans without losing sight of the specific venue.
Choosing Only as a Suitable Base
Only is particularly suitable for travellers who want to combine a clear programme focus with nature and regional history. The six-day Music/Nature Camp offers a more comprehensive musical setting, while Jam Camp and Animal Tracking provide different points of emphasis. The Inside:Outside Retreat is aimed specifically at saxophonists. Before booking, therefore, compare the duration and respective venue of the offer you are interested in.
