Bolivar: History, Green Spaces and River
Accommodation in Bolivar
Bolivar offers three distinct historic districts, as well as green spaces and peaceful river outings. Pleasant Run Creek Park, the Hatchie River, and the seasonal Farmer's Market each add a different touch. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Bolivar, consider whether history, time outdoors, or a mix of both should be the focus of your stay.
History in Bolivar and Hardeman County
Bolivar’s historic districts include the Bills-McNeal District, the Court Square District, and the North Main Street District. One specific historic building is the former log courthouse: it was built in 1824 and moved from the square to its current location in 1827. Today, it is known as the Little Courthouse Museum. The second and fourth Saturdays of each month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., are listed as visiting hours; check in advance whether the museum is currently open then.
The history room at the Bolivar-Hardeman County Library can also offer a glimpse into local history. The public may visit even without a library card. The Hardeman County Courthouse is also part of the region’s historical story: the 1868 building is the seventh-oldest courthouse in Tennessee.
Green Spaces, Trails, and Water
Pleasant Run Creek Park encompasses 170 acres of green space and has trails as well as a state-certified arboretum. The park combines walking trails with a botanical focus. An arboretum offers a reason to plan time outdoors not just as a walk, but also as an opportunity to observe nature.
The City of Bolivar’s Parks and Recreation Department has six parks and two fishing lakes. Visitors can take a peaceful river outing on the scenic Hatchie River. There are different ways to enjoy the outdoors: trails and green space on land, or a peaceful outing on the water.
The Farmer's Market Through the Year
The Bolivar Farmer's Market is located on Lafayette Street, right next to the historic Court Square. For the May-to-October season, Tuesday and Saturday are listed as market days. Check before your trip whether these days apply to your visit. The seasonal schedule is especially useful if you’d like to plan your stay around a market visit.
Luez Theater: History and Events
The historic Luez Theater is located in downtown Bolivar. After four years of renovation and restoration, it officially opened on Friday, December 14, 2018. The theater can be rented for events such as conferences, meetings, birthdays, weddings, and fundraisers. Since availability may change, ask about your preferred date in advance.
Tailor Your Stay
When looking for a vacation rental in Bolivar, it helps to consider what kind of days you have in mind: historic sightseeing, time outdoors, or a peaceful river outing. If you’d like to combine several interests, you can work the listed visiting hours and seasonal market days into your plans. If you’re planning an event at the Luez Theater, you’ll also need to check availability.
