Manchester, Tennessee, brings together archaeological history, outdoor art, festival music, wine and dining. Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park is the historic centerpiece; the Little Duck River Greenway offers a different focus with its walking path and art project. When looking for a vacation rental, consider both your travel dates and the themes you want to shape your stay.

Archaeology on the Duck River

West of Manchester, in Coffee County, Tennessee, the two separate areas of Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park lie along the Duck River. Old Stone Fort is an ancient earthwork enclosure built by Indigenous peoples of North America during the Middle Woodland period, approximately 100 BCE to 500 CE. This span extends from the pre-Christian era into the first centuries of the Common Era, giving the site a broad historical context. The term refers to an ancient enclosure made of earthworks.

The park museum displays replicas from the prehistoric era of Indigenous peoples of North America, as well as dioramas and photographs. On a hike at Old Stone Fort, you can learn more about the structure from twelve interpretive signs and experience waterfalls. The main hiking trail follows the enclosure wall. Old Stone Fort itself served as a ceremonial gathering place for Indigenous peoples of North America.

Walking Path, Public Art and Music

The Little Duck River Greenway is a walking path and is not open to horses or motorized vehicles. The Art Walk along the Greenway features murals commissioned by Manchester Parks and Recreation from artists Matt Wiley and Lance Turner. Unlike Old Stone Fort, whose significance is shaped by its archaeological history and interpretive signs, the Greenway focuses on the walking path and public art.

Bonnaroo takes place every June on a 700-acre farm in Manchester. Since festival plans can vary from year to year, check the specific dates before your trip. The Good Friends Music Fest was founded in 2018; it is a free, multi-day music festival in Manchester. This distinction is useful for trip planning: Bonnaroo has a recurring seasonal anchor in June, while free admission and a multi-day format define the Good Friends Music Fest.

Wine and Dining

Since 2004, Beans Creek Winery has offered handcrafted, award-winning wines made from grapes grown in Tennessee. The wine selection may change. The winery is also home to Café Rosé, which adds a relaxed, upscale dining experience to a visit. This brings together a connection to Tennessee wine and a dining experience at the same winery.
