Claiborne County combines impressive landscapes with traces of regional history. The Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is the main attraction: Nearly 85 miles of hiking trails, geological formations dating back hundreds of millions of years and the view from Pinnacle Overlook make the area especially appealing to travelers who want to spend their days actively and diversely.

Hiking Trails for Different Day Plans

Anyone planning a longer hike will find an extensive network of trails in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. The four-mile Daniel Boone Greenway is designed as a hiking and cycling trail and runs through the park. Another major route is the Cumberland Trail. It begins in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and leads to Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in northwestern Georgia.

Backcountry campsites are available throughout the trail system along the Cumberland Trail. Registration is required for overnight parking at some trailheads and campsites. If you would like to combine a multi-day tour with a shorter excursion, you should take the registration requirements at the relevant trailheads and campsites into account. For a day focused on scenic views, drive along Pinnacle Road; you can then reach the viewing platform via a short footpath.

The Powell River Blueway also offers a different way to experience the landscape. The Powell River Blueway Trail project is an initiative of the Powell River Tourism Committee of the Claiborne County Tourism Commission to improve public access to the Powell River for fishing and paddling. As part of the project, access was improved and signs, maps and brochures were provided for the access points. This allows you to weigh hiking, cycling and water-based activities when planning your trip.

History Around Cumberland Gap

The landscape tells more than just the story of geological changes. The Cumberland Gap Historic District includes 34 contributing buildings, three contributing structures and one contributing object. Fort Lyon can be reached via hiking trails to Pinnacle Overlook. Fort McCook is accessible by stairs from a nearby parking area.

Gap Cave lies below Pinnacle Overlook in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Two-hour guided tours of the cave through Cumberland Gap National Historical Park are offered from May through September. The Wilderness Road Trail passes through the historic Cumberland Gap Pass and complements the exploration of the area's history with a route through the landscape.

The Hensley Settlement offers a particularly vivid glimpse into past ways of life. It includes twelve log cabins from homesteads, a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop and a restored springhouse. For genealogical research, the Claiborne County Archives provides visitors with relevant resources. Other cultural points of interest include the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, with more than 35,000 artifacts, manuscripts, photographs and rare books, as well as the Little Congress Bicycle Museum. The latter was founded in 2003 in Cumberland Gap, where Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia meet.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

When looking for a vacation rental or vacation home in Claiborne County, you can use your preferred daily rhythm as a starting point. For extensive hikes, the Cumberland Trail and the nearly 85 miles of trails in the national park are the main attractions. Those who prefer shorter or different kinds of activities can plan for the Daniel Boone Greenway, the overlook, the historic sites or the Powell River Blueway project. This allows you to choose your accommodation based on the experiences you want to define your trip, without having to commit to just one activity.

The area's development is also useful for orientation: After the Cumberland Gap Tunnel was completed in 1996, Cumberland Gap was bypassed by US 25E, diverting traffic away from the central business district. For further trip planning, you can also visit Cumberland Gap. Other destinations for orientation include Monroe County, Knox, Carter, Maury County, Tipton, Jackson County and Stewart County.
