Discover Alcoa: Parks, Trails, and City History
Accommodation in Alcoa
Alcoa offers a variety of starting points for a trip: nature experiences at Springbrook Park, more than 18 miles of paved trails, music featuring regional and local musicians, and a city history closely connected to aluminum production. When choosing a vacation rental in Alcoa, you can therefore consider whether you would prefer to spend your days outdoors, at events, or exploring history.
Arriving in and Getting Oriented in Alcoa
McGhee Tyson Airport is located at 2055 Alcoa Highway, Alcoa, TN 37701. For arrival planning, it is also helpful to know that the rental car counters are located in the lower level of the terminal building near baggage claim. This allows you to organize your trip around your preferred focus from the very beginning, without the accommodation itself having to offer specific amenities.
Springbrook Park, Duck Pond, and the Greenway
Springbrook Park stretches along Springbrook Road from Alcoa High School to Hunt Road. The larger park grounds are home to Alcoa Duck Pond. There is a fishing pier for visitors there. If you like to keep different daily rhythms open when planning your trip, you can consider this park and waterside landscape as a distinct day-trip focus.
The Alcoa-Maryville Greenway is also available for active days. It includes more than 18 miles of paved trails running through Alcoa and Maryville. Its length makes the Greenway appealing for different types of planning: You can schedule a longer section of trail or structure your stay so that the trails occupy only part of the day. Together with Springbrook Park, it creates a clear nature and recreation component when searching for suitable accommodation in Alcoa.
Music, Events, and Special Places
The Songs by the Brook event series focuses on Americana, folk, and blues performances by regional and local musicians. For those interested in culture, it complements the landscape experiences with a musical perspective on the region. FreedomFest is also part of the venue's history: In 2006, the festival became an all-day event and was expanded to Springbrook Park. This historical development should be clearly considered separately in terms of timing from current program planning.
A distinctive cultural landmark is Millennium Manor Castle, a castle located in Alcoa whose architecture is modeled after a Roman castle. Construction began in June 1937 and was completed in December 1946. Public tours are scheduled from 12 to 5 p.m. on summer weekends. The price is 15 U.S. dollars per person, or a maximum of 40 U.S. dollars for up to eight people; tours take place by appointment only.
Historical bus tours were offered during Alcoa's city anniversary celebrations. The accompanying brochure also allowed the tour to be followed as a self-drive tour. Those interested in the city's origins can thereby gain a historical perspective without equating the route with a currently offered tour.
Understanding Alcoa's History
The development of the Alcoa city area followed several land purchases by the Aluminum Company of America in 1910. Construction of the town site from which the city of Alcoa emerged began in 1917. The Little Tennessee River and its tributaries were considered a good source of the hydropower necessary for aluminum production. Springbrook Pool is also part of local history: It opened in early summer 1931 and can be rented for private celebrations outside regular operating hours.
