Lawrence County brings together mining history and trails in the Black Hills. The subpages for Spearfish, Deadwood, and Lead are separate destinations, not three names for the same accommodation location.

Deadwood and Lead

Deadwood was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. The Adams Museum was founded in 1930 to preserve and exhibit the history of the Black Hills. Potato Creek Johnny’s 7.346-troy-ounce gold nugget is on display at the Adams Museum. The Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center at 160 West Main Street in Lead offers seasonal trolley rides through Lead. The Homestake Opera House in Lead was built in 1914. The gold nugget is a museum exhibit; trolley rides in Lead must be confirmed seasonally.

Trails and scenery

The Homestake Trail is a 5.7-mile, non-motorized trail between Lead and Deadwood that can be used for hiking and biking. Spearfish Canyon offers hiking trails, waterfalls, and a scenic drive. US Highway 14A runs for nearly 20 miles through Spearfish Canyon, from the town of Spearfish to Cheyenne Crossing. The Homestake Trail connects Lead and Deadwood; the highway through Spearfish Canyon is a different route.
