In Hermosa, local history and community events come together. The HAHA Museum is more than just a museum: its building was constructed as Hermosa Public School in 1889 and has a history of its own. The Doug Hesnard Memorial Garden and Council Oak Tree are also places of interest for visitors interested in history and nature.

The HAHA Museum and its historic building

The HAHA Museum and Community Center is located at 25 North 2nd Street in Hermosa. In June, July, and August, the museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. If you are planning a stay during these months, you can schedule your visit within these hours. You can request a special tour of the museum by email.

The history of the building also makes a visit interesting: the building now used as the HAHA Museum was built as Hermosa Public School in 1889. It was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Hermosa Masonic Lodge on February 17, 2009. The historic building was moved to its present location using many horse teams. Its days as a school, its later designation as a Masonic Lodge, and its current use as a museum are distinct chapters in the story of the same building.

Garden and Council Oak Tree

The Doug Hesnard Memorial Garden is located in front of the HAHA Museum. It was established to honor Doug Hesnard's love of flowers and gardening. Its purpose as a personal memorial distinguishes it from the history of the museum building: here, the focus is on remembering a person and his connection to gardening.

The Council Oak Tree offers a different sense of time. It has stood on the banks of Battle Creek for more than 400 years and has witnessed the unfolding of history in this area. The tree is considered the largest bur oak in South Dakota. Visitors interested in the long history of a place will find here a striking connection with nature, distinct from the stories of the museum and garden.

Art and community events in 2026

From October 1 to 3, 2026, the Hermosa Arts & History Association will hold its third annual local art show and sale. Artists will paint in the community on Thursday and Friday. The event combines art on display and for sale with a glimpse of the artistic process in the local community. For visitors who want to plan their stay around a specific date, this three-day event offers a special reason to visit alongside the seasonal museum visit.

The Christmas Carnival is scheduled to take place at Hermosa School on December 6, 2026. Planned activities include Santa and Mrs. Santa, food, children's games, a Santa Store, and craft vendors. The HAHA Christmas Carnival is an annual thank-you event for local residents. Activities include children's games and a free soup supper prepared by HAHA members. Families planning a visit around this date can look forward to a community-focused event with activities specifically listed for children. As the Carnival is planned for 2026, this date applies to that year's event only.

If you would like to discover other places in addition to Hermosa, you can also include Custer in your travel plans.
