Charles Mix County combines expansive waterscapes with an unusually vivid history along the Missouri River. For planning your trip, you can choose between nature experiences, historic sites, and an extended drive through the landscape. Especially if you are looking for a vacation rental or vacation home, it is worth deciding on the focus of your stay first: Should the day begin by the water, at historic buildings, or on a scenic route?

Water, Bird Migration, and Trails at Lake Andes

The Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge encompasses a 4,700-acre lake that formed during the last Ice Age. Thousands of waterfowl pass through the refuge every spring and fall. This gives the landscape a distinctly different character from a purely recreational destination by the water: the annual cycle and bird migration are among the defining impressions of this area. The Owens Bay Nature Trail runs along the shore of Lake Andes and offers a tangible way to experience the landscape on foot.

Further water-based experiences can be found along the Missouri River and at Lake Francis Case. North Point Recreation Area is located on the banks of the Missouri River immediately upstream from Fort Randall Dam. Platte Creek Recreation Area offers fishing opportunities at Lake Francis Case; Snake Creek Recreation Area is used there by boaters and anglers. Snake Creek Recreation Area also has two campgrounds with 115 campsites and ten camping cabins. Those traveling with different interests can therefore plan a stay that combines nature, water, and historic sightseeing without making every day the same.

History at Fort Randall

From 1863 to 1865, Fort Randall served as an important outpost on the upper Missouri River for operations against the Sioux. On the grounds, visitors can walk across the fortified parade ground, which is about half a mile long. Archaeological remains of the outpost's former buildings are also located there. The cruciform building at Fort Randall was erected in 1875 and adds a specific surviving structure to the site's historic character.

The exhibits at the Fort Randall Dam Visitor Center cover the construction of the dam, local cultural history, paleontological history, early exploration, and the region's natural history. The Fort Randall Visitor Center also contains a freshwater aquarium with fish species from the Missouri River. A visit therefore allows you to learn about the site's history and the river landscape from different perspectives.

Museums, Buildings, and Places of Remembrance

The Charles Mix County Historical Society preserves several buildings for public viewing and use. These include an original log cabin, a church, a small residence, a blacksmith shop, and a post office. Antique agricultural equipment, photographs, and other artifacts are also displayed on the grounds. This site can be interesting for a trip with children or multiple generations because various buildings and objects come together here to create a tangible historical narrative.

Geddes also has its own highlights. The Geddes Historical Society offers tours of historic buildings that have been restored to their original condition. The Geddes Claim Shanty was built by Charles and James Phillips around 1883. Fur Trader's Days is held annually in Geddes, a celebration featuring games and entertainment.

The Pickstown & Fort Randall Museum organizes its collection into four historical periods. It is located in the Rainbow Room Complex, which includes the town's last three original buildings. In addition, Peter Norbeck's childhood home commemorates the home of South Dakota's ninth governor. In the Randall Creek Recreation Area, the eagle roost is designated as a National Natural Landmark.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Focus
