York combines impressive landscapes along the Catawba River with places where the history of South Carolina can be experienced in many different ways. Between the river, forests, lakes and historic farms, a destination emerges where you can combine active days, cultural discoveries and more relaxing activities. When searching for a vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worthwhile to first determine the experiences you want and then choose the right base for planning your trip.

River Landscapes, Lakes and Trails

Those who want to get to know York primarily from the water will find three boat ramps at Ebenezer Park. They are open 365 days a year from dawn until dark. Fort Mill Access in York County also has a boat ramp and a parking lot. The Catawba Scenic River offers opportunities for recreational fishing and boating. A 30-mile section of the Catawba River that runs through York County as well as Lancaster and Chester County was designated a State Scenic River in June 2008. The associated corridor and adjacent uplands include large areas of undeveloped woodland as well as agricultural and pastureland.

Several trails are available for different day plans. Kings Mountain State Park has the 16-mile Kings Mountain National Recreation Trail and the 1.8-mile Ridgeline Trail. Fishing is possible there at Lake York and Lake Crawford. The Catawba River Trail at Riverwalk is a 3.35-mile paved multi-use trail for walking, running and cycling. Restrooms are available at the parking lots at Riverwalk and River Park and at the trailhead; there is also a canoe and kayak ramp near the trailhead. The York Greenway is mostly wooded, follows a former railroad line and is used by cyclists and walkers.

History to See and Experience

Historic Brattonsville includes more than 30 Colonial and Antebellum-era buildings, including two house museums. The site also includes a battlefield site from the American Revolutionary War with an interpretive trail. The Heritage Farm Program preserves rare animal breeds such as Gulf Coast sheep, Devon cattle and Ossabaw Island pigs. It also demonstrates historic farming techniques and everyday activities with costumed interpreters.

At Kings Mountain State Park, the Living History Farm recreates a 19th-century Southern farm. It includes a barn, a cotton gin, a blacksmith and carpentry workshop, as well as farm animals. At Kings Mountain National Military Park, a museum with audiovisual displays and artifacts, along with an auditorium, explains the battle. The 25-minute park film “Frontier Battles: Kings Mountain 1780” is shown there. A 1.5-mile self-guided walking trail leads through the battlefield from the perspective of Patriot and Loyalist militiamen; interpretive panels explain various aspects of the battle along the way.

The history of the Catawba Indian Nation is also part of the region’s cultural profile. The Catawba Cultural Center preserves and shares its culture. The Yehasure Trail at the Catawba Cultural Center leads to the Catawba River and includes interpretive panels. Allison Creek Park also provides access to a historic South Carolina state marker near the site of the ironworks.

Museums, Science and Coffee

The Museum of York County offers several different ways to explore natural and regional history. At the Naturalist Center, visitors can explore more than 2,000 specimens hands-on. The museum also includes the Settlemyre Planetarium with digital projection and new programs. The exhibition “Ice Age Carolinas: Exploring Our Pleistocene Past” focuses on the Ice Age history of the Carolinas.

The YoCo Coffee Trail provides an enjoyable addition. This self-guided route leads to more than ten independently operated cafés in York County. This allows you to add a local coffee break to your trip planning without structuring the day around a single destination.

The Right Base for Your Trip

When choosing a vacation rental in York, you can compare the focus of your days: water and boating, longer or shorter trails, historic sites, museums or regional coffee culture. The activities mentioned are not automatically located in one shared area; thematic planning therefore helps you organize your own excursions clearly.

For further trip planning, you can also explore Rock Hill, Fort Mill and Lake Wylie. Please note when planning that the McCelvey Center is currently closed for repair work.
