Pontiac combines Sandhill’s history with extensive educational and nature-based offerings. Those planning a trip with a variety of experiences will find opportunities here for leisurely discoveries, walks, and active days. When choosing a vacation rental or holiday home, it is therefore worth considering what kind of stay you prefer: historical insights, paths through the landscape, or offerings related to research and environmental education.

Sandhill: History and Educational Programs

The Sandhill Experiment Station was established in Pontiac in 1926. A historic office building was also built in Sandhill in 1927, while the Lake House was constructed in 1932 by Works Progress Administration laborers. These three dates represent different chapters in the area’s history and give the region a distinct historical character.

The Sandhill Research and Education Center extends across a 570-acre campus. Its nonprofit educational offerings include the Sandhill Children's Garden. For families, this thematic focus can be an interesting addition to walks, while School Days takes place outdoors and focuses on South Carolina crops and their history. The Forest and Wildlife Field Day is also part of the nonprofit educational offerings of the Sandhill Research and Education Center.

Specific conditions apply when visiting the Clemson Sandhill Research and Education Center: The grounds are open to visitors daily from 8:00 a.m. until dusk, provided that the visit is connected with the educational, research, and outreach mission of Sandhill REC. Anyone planning to include this area in their itinerary should take the nature of the offering into account when organizing their day.

Walking Trails and Active Outings

The Sandhill Research and Education Center includes 50 acres of walking trails. In addition, Sesquicentennial State Park offers approximately 5.9 miles of hiking trails and 5 miles of mountain biking trails. This makes it possible to combine different ideas for the day without reducing the landscape to a single activity.

The Sandhills Hiking Trail is an easy, 1.9-mile loop around the lake. The 0.5-mile Jackson Creek Nature Trail passes a waterfall and runs through a lowland area and along a wooded slope. Those looking for a longer route can use the 3.5-mile Loop Road Trail for hiking and mountain biking.

Sesquicentennial State Park is located approximately 3 miles west of Pontiac on Highway 1, also known as Two Notch Road. Seasonal kayak rentals expand the opportunities on the water there. Sandhill was also selected because of its sandy soil.

Important Notes for Trip Planning

Boating on the waters of the Sandhill Research and Education Center is permitted exclusively for Fishing Club members and is subject to strict conditions. During the 2026 membership period, from March 18 to December 18, access to the Sandhill Fish Club is available seven days a week unless otherwise stated. This regulation should be taken into account when planning a stay.

Another historical landmark is Spears Creek Baptist Church, which was founded in the early 19th century. Pontiac thus offers a varied mix of nature trails, educational programs, and history. Accommodation can be chosen accordingly, depending on whether you primarily want to include walks, family-oriented discoveries, mountain biking trails, or historic sites in your trip.
