Santee is located on the southern shore of Lake Marion, the largest freshwater lake in South Carolina. Around the lake, water activities, wooded trails, wetlands, golf courses and historic sites come together to create a destination with a range of attractions. If nature, outdoor activities and culture are equally important to everyone in your travel group, you can choose your vacation rental or vacation home based on your planned daily itinerary.

Lake Marion and Santee State Park

Visitors can fish for largemouth bass, striped bass, bream, crappie and catfish in Lake Marion at Santee State Park. A valid South Carolina fishing license is required. Two boat ramps in Santee State Park provide private access to Lake Marion. This makes the state park a suitable destination for travelers who plan to spend time on the water and include fishing as a fixed part of their trip itinerary.

The trails in the state park also showcase different aspects of the landscape. The Limestone Nature Trail is an easy loop trail through densely wooded terrain. Along the way, wildflowers and wildlife such as deer, rabbits and snakes shape the nature experience. The Sinkhole Pond Trail, by contrast, leads through pine forest, swampy areas and an almost desert-like landscape around a limestone sinkhole pond. The two trails offer different highlights and can therefore be chosen according to the desired landscape experience.

Hiking, Wildlife Viewing and the Palmetto Trail

There are two access points to the Palmetto Trail in the vicinity of the Town of Santee. The Lake Marion Passage of the Palmetto Trail crosses Lake Marion near Santee via an old road bridge. This passage complements the natural experiences in the state park with a distinctive view of the connection between trail, lake and regional history.

The Santee National Wildlife Refuge is located approximately 5 miles north of Santee and Santee State Park. The Bluff Unit contains the Santee Indian Mound-Fort Watson archaeological site. On the Wright’s Bluff Nature Trail, visitors can observe wildflowers, songbirds, small mammals, reptiles, as well as wading birds, Canada geese, shorebirds and other wetland species. The Santee Indian Mound is more than 1,000 years old and later served as the site of the British Fort Watson during the American Revolutionary War.

Culture and Golf as Additional Travel Ideas

Santee’s Cultural Arts and Visitor Center is housed in the former Old Parler School. The building preserves original Southern Heart Pine floorboards that are well over 100 years old. Those who want to learn about the history of the town alongside its nature and waterways will find an independent cultural focus here.

Golfers can choose from several different facilities. Santee National Golf Club combines gentle hills and moss-covered oaks with five strategically positioned lakes on the golf course. There are four sets of tees at each hole. Five of the 18 holes at Lake Marion Golf Course feature water hazards; the facility also has a lighted driving range. Santee Cooper Country Club has an 18-hole golf course as well as a clubhouse, driving range, putting green, golf cart rental and snack bar.

Choose the Right Accommodation Based on Your Travel Plans

When searching for a vacation rental in Santee, you can first decide which themes will shape your trip: fishing and boat ramps, nature trails and wildlife viewing, historic discoveries or golf. When different interests come together, it is worth giving the excursion destinations different priorities in your personal daily planning and basing your accommodation search on them.
