Walhalla combines diverse outdoor experiences with engaging history. Those planning a trip with nature, activity, and cultural discoveries in mind will find a variety of ways to spend time together here. When choosing your vacation rental, it is therefore worth deciding first what you would most like to focus on: Would you like to explore walking trails and waterfalls, plan longer hiking and cycling routes, or learn more about the region’s history?

Hiking Trails for Different Day Plans

The Walhalla Greenway is an approximately one-mile-long paved recreational trail along West South Broad Street. The public can access it at numerous points. This makes it a manageable option for an outing where spending time on a shared trail, rather than covering the length of an extensive route, is the main focus.

For a longer outing, the Ross Mountain Passage is available. This 4.9-mile hiking and biking trail connects Stumphouse Park with Oconee State Park. The Blue Ridge Railroad Trail, by contrast, is a 2.5-mile one-way trail; its starting point is in Stumphouse Park. It follows an unfinished section of the Blue Ridge Railroad from the 19th century, and three abandoned tunnels can be seen along the way. The Blue Ridge Railroad Trail combines physical activity with traces of history.

Other routes lead to special scenic spots. Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park is a public mountain biking facility in Walhalla. Issaqueena Falls is a 100-foot waterfall on Cane Creek and can be reached via an easy 15-minute hike from the Stumphouse Tunnel parking lot. At Oconee Station, a nature trail leads to another trail that enters Sumter National Forest. The Oconee Connector Trail, also called Oconee Passage, is 4 miles long and connects Oconee Station with Oconee State Park.

History and Culture in Walhalla

The Oconee History Museum offers an exhibition hall with a self-guided tour covering the history of Oconee County. Its subjects range from the history of Indigenous peoples and immigration to railroads and New Deal programs, as well as textile mills and agriculture. This makes it possible to complement an active day with a cultural visit.

Stumphouse Tunnel also tells the story of a major undertaking: It was built in the 1850s, primarily by Irish immigrants, as part of a project intended to connect the port of Charleston with cities in the Midwest. Oconee Station is a stone blockhouse that was used by the South Carolina state militia as an outpost from approximately 1792 to 1799. The Walhalla Performing Arts Center serves as a venue for performances, conferences, and special events.

A Suitable Base for Planning Your Trip

A vacation rental in Walhalla can serve as a base for a vacation whose daily activities alternate between nature and culture. Before booking, organize the experiences you have planned: The Greenway and Issaqueena Falls are suitable for shorter outings, while Ross Mountain Passage, Blue Ridge Railroad Trail, and Oconee Connector Trail offer longer routes. The museum, tunnel, historic station, and performing arts center add further themes to the trip. For further planning, you can also visit Seneca and add another destination to your stay.
