Horry: Discover Coast, Nature, and History
Accommodation in Horry
Horry combines coastal landscapes, riverbanks, nature reserves, and a multifaceted history. If you are planning a trip with a variety of experiences, you will find opportunities here for days by the water, walks, paddling excursions, wildlife observation, and historical discoveries. You can sensibly tailor your choice of vacation rental or vacation home to your preferred focus: coast, landscape, culture, or a combination of several themes.
Nature and Routes by the Water
The Horry County Bike & Run Park is located along the Intracoastal Waterway near River Oaks Drive in Carolina Forest. The park’s parking lot serves as the first official starting point of the East Coast Greenway in South Carolina. This gives the site a specific connection to a regional route without requiring you to limit your trip to a single activity.
In Little River, the Vereen Memorial Historical Gardens are located along the Intracoastal Waterway. The grounds encompass more than 115 acres of forest and wetlands. A section of the original Kings Highway, a colonial route between Boston and Charleston, has also been preserved there. Those who want to combine nature and history will find two different perspectives on the same destination here.
Other landscapes offer their own distinctive features. Socastee Recreational Park is located on a 91.5-acre site along Enterprise Road in southern Horry County. Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve contains the largest concentration of Carolina bays in South Carolina and includes pine savannas, blackwater swamp forests, and a section of Socastee Swamp. In Horry County, Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge includes the lower sections of the Waccamaw River. The Conway Riverwalk provides access to the banks of the Waccamaw River; the Cox Ferry Recreation Area near Conway offers opportunities for paddling, mountain biking, and hiking.
Coast, Culture, and Regional History
Myrtle Beach State Park stretches along the Grand Strand coast in a coastal maritime forest. It opened in 1936 as the first park in South Carolina’s state park system. Another gateway to coastal history leads to Atlantic Beach: the community was founded around 1934 as a coastal community for Black people who were denied access to other beaches in the region by segregation. Atlantic Beach is one of the few coastal communities in the United States founded and governed by Black people.
Music and dance are also part of the regional story. Shag developed from dancing in the pavilions of Myrtle Beach and other pavilions and was designated the official state dance of South Carolina in 1984. At the Horry County Museum, you can explore the county’s history, prehistory, and natural history. The natural history exhibits include American alligators, American black bears, snakes, and birds of prey. The Freshwater Aquarium illustrates life in the local rivers and lakes.
The L. W. Paul Living History Farm recreates life on a one-horse farm between 1900 and 1955. Visitors can experience life in a farming community during the period depicted and observe activities that were customary on traditional family farms. In addition, the Socastee Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, and the Galivants Ferry Historic District, which was added in 2001, point to the region’s historical development.
Choosing the Right Focus for Your Accommodation
When searching for a vacation rental in Horry, it helps to first determine your preferred travel rhythm. If the coast is to be the main focus, Myrtle Beach State Park and the history of the coastal communities are natural themes for your planning. If you are interested in rivers, wetlands, and paddling opportunities, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Waccamaw River, and the natural areas move more strongly into the foreground. Those interested in culture can combine the museum, Living History Farm, and historic districts.
For further orientation, you can also compare Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Longs, Loris, and Nichols. This way, you choose your accommodation not only by the place name but by the experiences that are meant to shape your trip.
