Pawleys Island combines a wide white beach with sandy dunes, saltwater creeks, and marshland. On the ocean-facing side, a peaceful, unspoiled beach defines the area, which is known for its surf. Anyone looking for a vacation rental for a varied holiday can choose between days on the water, nature watching, and historical discoveries here.

Water, Beach, and Paths for Active Days

Surfing and bodyboarding are possible at Pawleys Island Beach. The creek waters are suitable for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding; you can also observe wildlife there. Three boat ramps are available for launching boats. These different water activities allow you to shape the rhythm of your day according to your own interests: experience the surf on the open beach or explore the calmer creek waters.

The surrounding area can also be incorporated into your travel plans by bicycle. A paved bike path runs along Ocean Highway, also known as U.S. Highway 17, from Pawleys Island north to Murrells Inlet. The route therefore provides a concrete option for travelers who do not want to spend their entire stay at the beach. You can find more destinations for your travel plans at Georgetown and Murrells Inlet.

Discover Historic Pawleys Island

The Historic District gives the area a second, distinctly historical side. Signs there provide brief information about the history of the historic antebellum homes. The district also includes an interdenominational chapel, an inn, and numerous older homes. Pawleys Island Chapel was dismantled, relocated, and rebuilt on Pawleys Island. It holds interdenominational services on Sundays.

Those interested in architecture will notice the so-called “Pawleys Island Look.” It includes steep roof pitches, dormers, wraparound ground-floor porches, exposed rafter tails, and double-hung windows. A walk through the area thus also becomes an encounter with recurring architectural details.

Hammocks, Shops, and Local Traditions

The Hammock Shops Village, with twenty-one independent shops, offers a special connection to the area’s history. The Original Hammock Shop was founded in 1938. The history of the hammock goes back even further: In 1889, a riverboat captain designed a hammock made from cotton ropes. Pawleys Island is known as “America’s Oldest Seaside Resort” – a designation that underscores the historic character of the seaside resort.

Recurring events are also part of the character of the area. Hammock Day has been celebrated every summer in Pawleys Island for many years. In addition, Pawleys Island hosts three major festivals and special events every year. Travelers who enjoy combining their trip with local traditions and special dates can take this side of the area into account when planning.

Public Beach Accesses and Choosing Your Accommodation

At the southern end of Pawleys Island is the largest free public beach-access parking area in Georgetown County. Pawleys Island also has eight additional public beach accesses. The Town of Pawleys Island provides a beach wheelchair free of charge at the southern beach access on a “first come, first served” basis. These public amenities are useful reference points when choosing the location of your accommodation based on your planned beach and water activities.

Two causeways connect Pawleys Island on the Waccamaw Neck to the mainland. When looking for a suitable vacation rental, you can therefore first consider which mix of activities is most important to you: beach and surf, creek experiences, cycling, or history and architecture. Pawleys Island offers concrete options for these interests without requiring you to limit yourself to just one type of holiday.
