Clarendon: Nature, History and Lake Marion
Accommodation in Clarendon
Clarendon combines nature experiences on the water with impressive history and regional culture. Lake Marion, which is located in Clarendon County, is an important point of reference. The Santee National Wildlife Refuge is located on the north shore, where you can fish from the shore and from a boat. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Clarendon should therefore first consider whether the trip is to focus primarily on nature, water, history or several of these themes.
Lake Marion, Protected Areas and Trails Through the Landscape
The Santee National Wildlife Refuge offers a special natural area with the Dingle Pond Unit. The unit consists predominantly of a 420-acre Carolina Bay and is designated as a natural area for public use. This classification is helpful for planning: the Dingle Pond Unit represents a landscape experience, while the refuge at Lake Marion also offers fishing opportunities from the shore and from a boat.
The Lake Marion Passage is aimed at travellers who want to plan a longer route. The trail, which is rated as moderate, is 34.5 miles long, and camping is permitted there. It runs along the flood line on the north side of Lake Marion between Santee and Mill Creek County Park. By contrast, the Pocotaligo Nature Walk is much more compact: a boardwalk approximately one mile long leads through the Pocotaligo Swamp. A historical interpretive marker, a picnic area and a covered area complement this trail.
Taw Caw Park also combines water and outdoor recreation. The 36-acre recreation area is located on Taw Caw Creek at Lake Marion and offers fishing piers, a boat landing and a boardwalk. It also has picnic shelters, picnic tables, grills and a playground. Families travelling with children will therefore find not only time by the water but also a clearly designated play area; those who want to fish or moor a boat can include the available facilities in their daily plans.
Historic Traces from Antiquity to the Revolution
The Santee Indian Mound-Fort Watson area reaches far back into the past. It contains a mound that is more than 1,200 years old. During the American Revolutionary War, a British garrison was located here and was later captured by American troops under General Francis Marion. The historic site is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. At Fort Watson, historic information panels explain the battle and the use of siege towers during the American Revolution.
Other sites reflect the history of Francis Marion and the Southern Campaigns. The Battle of Nelson’s Ferry is associated with Francis Marion’s rescue of 150 prisoners in August 1780. Six of the more than 20 murals on the Swamp Fox Trail in Clarendon County are located in Summerton. The murals depict the confrontations between General Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox,” and the British in 1780–1781. Each mural tells a story from the American Revolution during the Southern Campaigns.
Town History, Art and Events
In Manning, local history is concentrated in the Manning Commercial Historic District. Its architectural significance lies in an intact group of buildings associated with Manning’s administrative and commercial growth as the county seat of Clarendon County from approximately 1890 to 1958. The Weldon Auditorium complements this historical perspective with musical and theatrical performances. The building also contains a loggia, a Hall of Fame and an art gallery.
An annual event is the Striped Bass Festival in downtown Manning. The programme includes a parade, rides, vendors and a street dance. For travel planning, this means that in addition to days focused on nature and history, Clarendon also offers an event firmly associated with Manning, where public life takes centre stage. The church that, under the leadership of Reverend Richburg, became an important meeting place for the desegregation movement in Clarendon County in the late 1940s and early 1950s also points to an important chapter in civil rights history. The case Briggs v. Elliott emerged from this movement.
Water, Golf and the Right Base
For days on the water, the John C Land, III Boating and Sports Facility in Summerton is one of the many boat ramps and landing facilities in Clarendon County. Golf can also be planned as a separate focus: the Players Course at Wyboo is an 18-hole golf course on the shore of Lake Marion. Wyboo Golf Club is designated as a Tom Jackson Signature Course. Clarendon therefore offers different reasons for choosing accommodation, without nature, history and active days necessarily having to form the same travel programme.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Clarendon, you can therefore use your desired experiences as a starting point: water and fishing, longer trails and camping, historic sites, local history, events or golf. For further orientation, you can also consider the places Manning and Summerton separately.
