Charleston offers a wide range of activities: the Angel Oak as a natural attraction, political history at the Old Exchange, museums and theater, as well as golf and boat access to Fort Sumter. This lets you give different weight to nature, culture, and a clearly timed excursion. When looking for a vacation rental in Charleston, it’s worth first deciding which experiences will set the pace of your trip.

The Angel Oak: Nature and Long Spans of Time

The Angel Oak is a historic Southern live oak and the centerpiece of a public park in the City of Charleston. It is considered the largest live oak east of the Mississippi; its age is estimated at 300 to 400 years. This range illustrates how far back the tree’s history goes without turning the estimate into an exact age.

The park is open to the public seven days a week, and admission is free. However, it is closed on holidays. Account for holidays when planning your visit and check the relevant details in advance.

Political History in the Historic District and Old Exchange

The Charleston Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark District on October 9, 1960, and added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. The two dates represent different forms of recognition for the historic district. The Great Hall of the Old Exchange was the historic setting for South Carolina’s selection of delegates to the Continental Congress; the Declaration of Independence and the ratifying convention for the United States Constitution were also held there. In addition, a reception was held for President George Washington. The site’s history thus encompasses political decisions as well as a presidential visit.

Museum and Theater: Different Cultural Offerings

The International African American Museum features galleries, the African Ancestors Memorial Garden, and the Center for Family History. These three offerings provide different ways to explore the museum’s themes: exhibitions, a memorial garden, and family history. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; last admission is at 4 p.m., and it is closed on Mondays. Hours may change, so check them before your visit.

The Dock Street Theatre operates year-round and presents productions by local arts groups and touring companies. Its theater program complements the museum offerings with stage performances; individual productions may vary. If your travel group has a range of interests, you can plan historical topics, museum visits, and an evening at the theater as distinct priorities.

Golf, Visitor Services, and Fort Sumter

The Charleston Municipal Golf Course opened in 1929 on 120 acres. C. Bissell Jenkins gave the land to the city on the condition that it remain permanently a municipal golf course open to everyone. Tee times can be booked online, by phone, or in person up to seven days in advance. As booking policies may change, check the current terms before making plans. The Charleston Visitor Center offers various services to make visitors’ stays easier.

The Fort Sumter Visitor Center at Liberty Square provides access to the boat to Fort Sumter. As of September 5, 2026, the visitor center was open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; check the hours before your trip. A Fort Sumter tour lasts 2¼ hours in total, including 60 minutes at the fort. You should also verify this duration before your visit. The clearly defined time commitment makes this excursion a different planning priority from a museum visit or a theater performance.

Experiences as a Guide to Choosing Accommodation

Consider which of these experiences you want to shape your trip, and tailor your search for a vacation rental accordingly. This lets you plan your stay around your group’s interests rather than trying to fit every offering into a single itinerary.
