Westmoreland offers a diverse mix of history, landscapes and excursions: You can explore sites from the 18th and 19th centuries, fish in lakes, travel along long trails or discover American art. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore worth deciding on your preferred travel style first. Should the trip focus primarily on culture and historic places, or are water, activity and nature at the center?

Discover History and Culture on Your Holiday

Bushy Run Battlefield is Pennsylvania’s only recognized battlefield of Native Americans. The site preserves and conveys the history of a decisive battle between the British and Native Americans during Pontiac’s War from 1763 to 1764. Anyone interested in the history of the region will find this a particularly distinctive focus for planning their trip.

West Overton Village also combines historic buildings with concrete insights into past ways of living and working. Nineteen historic buildings stand on 40 acres; the village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can tour the 1838 Overholt Homestead and the museum in the 1859 distillery building. In addition, West Overton Village offers an extensive guided tasting of Pennsylvania rye whiskey with six half-ounce portions.

Another cultural highlight is The Westmoreland Museum of American Art. The permanent exhibition galleries feature an extensive collection of American art, with a strong focus on art and artists from southwestern Pennsylvania. For groups of 20 or more and bus groups, visits to Historic Hanna’s Town can be arranged from May through mid-December.

Trails, Water and Landscapes

Those who enjoy traveling on foot or by bike can include the Great Allegheny Passage, which runs directly through Cedar Creek Park. There, it is used for hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. In Cedar Creek Gorge, water plunges over natural shale steps, adding a distinctive landscape experience to the trail.

Twin Lakes Park is suitable for a variety of day plans. A 2.5-mile figure-eight trail leads around both lakes. There are also paved stone paths, fishing piers, and adapted picnic and play areas designed as low-barrier facilities. The two lakes are stocked with robust sport fish. For a holiday with plenty of time outdoors, Bridgeport Dam offers opportunities for fishing, hunting and observing nature. Chestnut Ridge Park offers opportunities for boating, fishing, hunting and other outdoor sports. Bridgeport Dam has a 70-acre permanent body of water with a boat launch; Chestnut Ridge has a 25-acre recreational lake and also a boat launch.

Excursion Destinations for Active and Varied Days

The 24-acre freshwater lake at Mammoth Park offers fishing opportunities; the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission stocks it with fish. The Giant Slide Complex includes two stainless-steel slides approximately 100 feet long and a 40-foot plastic slide. Warmwater fish and trout are stocked in Northmoreland Lake, and the park also hosts an annual fishing competition. Idlewild’s SoakZone includes a lazy river, water slides, the Little Squirts children’s area and the Hydro Racers slides.

Keystone State Park covers 1,200 acres and has campsites, modern cabins, numerous trails and a lake that can be reached on foot. The Lakeside Trail is open to cyclists. For longer tours, the Westmoreland Heritage Trail offers an 8.5-mile section from Saltsburg to Delmont and a 9.3-mile section from Export to Trafford.

Experience Nature Mindfully

Powdermill Nature Reserve in Rector in Westmoreland County protects and preserves natural habitats where researchers and educators study ecological processes. More than 2,200 acres of woodland, streams, fields and ponds are available there for research and educational programs. The nature center features exhibitions on native wildlife and has an indoor stream as well as a Marsh Machine. In addition, the Westmoreland County Bureau of Parks and Recreation includes eleven parks and five hiking trails.

This allows you to tailor your accommodation search to your own daily plans: A holiday apartment suits a trip in which you want to combine culture, trails and excursions; for a nature-focused stay, on the other hand, accommodation can primarily be selected based on the activities you have planned. You can also include the places Greensburg, Hyde Park, New Stanton, New Florence, Irwin, North Belle Vernon, Latrobe, Donegal, Acme, Ligonier, Delmont, Adamsburg, Scottdale, New Kensington and Jones Mills in your further search.
