Bradford
Accommodation in Bradford
Bradford brings together its location in the Tuna Valley, historic collections, traces of oil history, and trails through city parks and along streams. The valley is named for the east and west branches of Tunungwant Creek, which converge here. Bradford’s Main Street is part of the Historic District; at the same time, the cultural offerings range from a museum dedicated to Marilyn Horne to an outdoor museum on the Crook family’s original farm property. As a destination, Bradford appeals to travelers who want to combine culture and history with trails, parks, and events.
Museums and History in Bradford
The Marilyn Horne Museum and Exhibit Center is located in the historic downtown and displays selected items from Marilyn Horne’s personal archive. It is considered the only museum in the world dedicated to her extraordinary life’s work. Visitors interested in this museum can combine their visit with a look at Bradford’s downtown history: Main Street is part of the Historic District. To explore the historic downtown, Bradford also offers a self-guided audio tour as well as occasional guided tours.
The history of the petroleum industry takes center stage at the Penn-Brad Oil Museum. Visitors can tour an authentic oil derrick and explore exhibits about the people, equipment, and technologies that built the petroleum industry. The museum preserves the history, heritage, and pioneering spirit of a significant oil region in Bradford. Alongside a 72-foot-high standard rig from the 1890s, visitors can listen to “Wildcatting Tales.”
The Zippo/Case Museum brings together different aspects of regional history: it features some of the rarest and oldest Case knives, as well as content about Zippo’s role in the American war effort during World War II. Crook Farm offers a different focus. This outdoor museum presents living history on the Crook family’s original farm property. Its School Day Program offers public, private, and homeschooled students a hands-on learning day.
Trails Along Streams and Through Parks
For outdoor activity, there are trails with different layouts and features. The Community Parks Trail is an easy, 3.4-mile paved loop. It connects Bradford’s city parks and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford campus with the Historic District. The R.E. McDowell Trail, by contrast, is a 1.4-mile paved point-to-point trail near the campus. It follows the west branch of Tunungwant Creek and features a trout stream stocked with fish. When planning an outing, you can choose between a loop and a point-to-point trail without treating the two routes as the same.
The Blaisdell-Emery Trail runs from South Bradford to Lewis Run along a former railroad corridor beside the East Branch of Tuna Creek. Its route along a former railroad corridor distinguishes it from the two paved trails, whose routes and lengths are described in more detail.
Events and Amenities at Callahan Park
Bradford offers family-friendly events year-round, including holiday festivals. The city hosts Wine Walks twice a year. Bradford’s Veterans Square has held annual Memorial Day observances for more than 100 years. These events have different focuses, from holidays and Wine Walks to the annual remembrance at Veterans Square.
Callahan Park offers a wide range of recreational facilities: an ice rink, two swimming pools, a splash park and playground, as well as basketball and tennis courts, pickleball courts, and baseball fields. You’ll find a variety of activities there during a visit to the park, from water and play areas to sports fields and courts. Bradford is part of the Pennsylvania Wilds tourism region.
