Sand Hill can be understood through its name’s history, historical figures, and the township’s landscape. The place was formerly called Mount Airy; 14 sand pits led to the name change. Sand Hill is also associated with a founding in 1845. These details provide specific points of reference for the local history and distinguish it from the recreational opportunities described in North Lebanon Township.

Local History and Historical Traces

Solomon Weber was born in 1840 and lived on Sandhill Road. He fought at Gettysburg and was the only known Civil War veteran in North Lebanon Township. His biography links a home in Sand Hill with a notable chapter in American history.

Another historic destination in North Lebanon Township is the Union Canal Tunnel. It is the oldest surviving transportation tunnel in the United States and was designated a National Historic Landmark on April 19, 1994. Light’s Fort is also part of the township’s history: the fort once stood within the boundaries of North Lebanon Township and is now an official Pennsylvania historic landmark.

Landscape and Local Character

A U-shaped ridge is the main feature of North Lebanon Township. It stands between 600 and 700 feet high and runs from east of Rockwood south to Sand Hill before continuing northeast. The ridge’s course, as well as its elevation, is a distinctive feature for navigating the landscape.

The areas around Sand Hill were used for agriculture. Today, there are fewer farms in the area than there used to be. Nature and former land uses also feature in the history of the Smutzie: it is privately owned, was once a settling basin for Bethlehem Steel, and formerly served as a wildlife refuge for Cleaver Brooks. The Smutzie also has abundant flora and fauna.

Recreation in North Lebanon Township

Union Canal Tunnel Park offers hiking trails, fishing opportunities, and picnic areas. Union Canal Days and canal boat rides were held there annually. Those planning outdoor activities during a stay will find options for different interests in one place: walking the trails, fishing, or taking a break at a picnic.

Lions Lake Park has a paved walking path; one loop is three-quarters of a mile long. The park also includes a 13-acre lake with opportunities for fishing and boating. A set loop and activities on the water offer different options. You can take the path’s length into account when planning your day.

The Community Park in North Lebanon Township has facilities for tennis, pickleball, baseball, soccer, and basketball. These sports offer another way to enjoy outdoor recreation. Together with hiking trails, picnic areas, and water activities, the parks offer a range of options without requiring every outing to be the same kind of experience.
