Lawrence County brings together a gorge designated a National Natural Landmark, historic structures, active outdoor pursuits, and Amish culture. Notable contrasts include the mill and covered bridge in McConnells Mill State Park, riding opportunities in Wampum, and cultural insights in several communities. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, you can base your choice on whether nature and activity or history and local traditions will shape your getaway.

Nature and Architectural History

McConnells Mill State Park encompasses 2,546 acres of Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, which is designated a National Natural Landmark. In the park, you can visit a historic grist mill and a covered bridge built in the 19th century. This brings a designated natural landscape and two specific examples of architectural and technological history into focus in the same park.

Quaker Falls Recreation Area is open again. Since this status may change, check the latest information before you travel.

Museums and Stories from New Castle

The Lawrence County Historical Society Museum houses an extensive archival collection on Shenango China, considered one of the largest in the world. A different historical perspective is offered by the “Freedom Fighters” tour through New Castle’s North Hill Historic District: New Castle residents who fought for American civil liberties and better access to freedom and equality are the focus of the tour.

Advance reservations are required for tours of the Clavelli Cultural Heritage Center; they are offered by appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Confirm the appointment details before your visit. The main tour at the Historic Warner Cascade Theatre Museum focuses on the history of the Warner family and includes a short film at the Cascade Theatre. The museum regularly welcomes women’s, men’s, and school groups for tours.

Trails, Riding, and Amish Culture

Wampum is designated a North Country Trail Town; the trail crosses Main Street. In Wampum, Mines & Meadows offers more than 84 miles of recreational trails on a 877-acre property for ATV and dirt bike riders. There are also rides through abandoned limestone mines underground. Irons Mill Farmstead offers a different kind of outdoor experience, with more than 40 outdoor attractions and a Candy Cannon.

Lawrence County is home to Pennsylvania’s second-largest Old Order Amish community and the twelfth-largest in the United States. Visitors can learn about Amish life on guided tours or along a self-guided driving route through the countryside. The two options differ in whether you follow a tour or explore the route on your own by car.

Outside Lawrence County, Volant is in the rural Amish region of western Pennsylvania. Its old-fashioned Main Street is lined with shops, restaurants, wineries, and a distillery. In a small red barn, Amish women make fresh Amish doughnuts every other Saturday and on event days. Separately, Nova Destinations brings together six wineries, breweries, and distilleries in Lawrence County; check with individual locations before visiting.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Focus

When looking for a vacation rental or holiday home, it helps to have a clear travel focus: a nature park and gorge, riding and trail opportunities, or museums and local culture. This way, you can base your choice of location on your travel plans rather than on just one type of outing.
