Juniata combines an agricultural landscape with wooded mountains, the gentle course of the Juniata River and a surprisingly diverse history. Those who want to combine a trip with culture, water-based experiences, regional traditions and events will find a variety of starting points for their own planning here. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore first decide whether historical discoveries, activities on the river, regional festivals or motorsports should be the focus.

History in Museums, Buildings and Landscapes

The Tuscarora Academy Museum is a particularly vivid place to visit. It is located in a building originally constructed as a church in 1816, which became Juniata County’s first secondary school in 1836. At the museum, you can see artefacts from local businesses, institutions, trades, agriculture and family life. Two rooms also recreate the boarding rooms of the academy’s students. This makes it possible to learn about history not only through dates, but also through earlier ways of living and learning.

The Pomeroy Academia Covered Bridge and Book Indian Mound offer further historical impressions. The Pomeroy Academia Covered Bridge is the longest surviving covered bridge in Pennsylvania. Book Indian Mound was identified as a burial mound of the earliest communities of the Clemson Island Culture in central Pennsylvania, dating from the Late Woodland period, approximately 700 to 1300 AD. At the Juniata County Courthouse, a changing exhibition of artefacts from Juniata County is presented to visitors in the corridors. The building itself also points to the past: Its completion was scheduled for January 1, 1875, and the total cost amounted to 63,000 US dollars.

The Tuscarora Valley Primitive Baptist Church is also part of the region’s historical character. It was founded on May 17, 1794. Places like these give a journey through Juniata different historical layers, from the early communities of the Late Woodland period to the history of education, religion and public life.

River Landscapes and Active Days

The Juniata River Water Trail is more than 150 miles long and designated as a National Recreation Trail. The two river branches of the Water Trail are Class I waterways; under normal conditions, their rapids and riffles are suitable for beginners. This allows you to shape a stay by the water in different ways: You can make the river the focus of boating experiences or appreciate the river landscape as a contrast to the wooded mountains and agricultural areas.

The Lewistown Narrows Access in Fermanagh Township, Juniata County, provides access to the Juniata River for fishing and boating. Due to improvement work, this access point was temporarily closed from July 13 to 16, 2026. If you are planning a stay centred around water-based activities, this time-limited notice should be included in your travel planning.

Festivals, Races and Regional Cuisine

The Juniata County Fair showcases the region’s agricultural character in many forms. The programme includes agricultural exhibitions, food, livestock shows, races, derbies and family-friendly entertainment. These include carnival rides, live music, truck and tractor races, rodeos and petting zoos. Exhibitions of domestic arts, crafts, horticulture and 4-H projects complete the picture.

Port Royal Speedway is located on the Juniata County Fairgrounds. From March to October, races take place there every weekend, including Sprint Car, Late Model and Pro Stock races, as well as events in the High Limit Racing Series and Lucas Oil Late Models. Another regional speciality is Goose Day, a tradition maintained in the Juniata River Valley for more than two centuries. Local restaurants serve goose dishes and other special recipes featuring goose for the occasion. In Mifflin, Juniata Valley Winery operates a main tasting room at 19175 Route 35 South.

Juniata as a Starting Point for Your Travel Planning

The variety of themes makes Juniata interesting for different types of travellers. Culture enthusiasts can focus on museums, historic buildings and religious history. Those who prefer the water can base their plans around the Juniata River Water Trail and the access point in Fermanagh Township. For a trip with children, the County Fair offers a mix of animals, rides, music and competitions; motorsport fans will find a dedicated attraction at Port Royal Speedway. It is best to choose a holiday apartment or holiday home according to which of these experiences should shape your trip, without presenting the individual destinations as a supposedly compact route.

For further regional orientation, you can also include E Waterford and Mifflintown in your search. This keeps travel planning open to different places and themes, while Juniata retains a clear character of its own through its history, river landscapes, regional cuisine and lively events.
