Crawford County combines quiet natural areas, lake landscapes, and historic sites with a variety of ideas for shared days on holiday. Between wetlands, forest paths, museums, and excursions on the water, you can shape your trip in many different ways: with wildlife observation, active routes, culture, or relaxing hours by the lake. When choosing your vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worth first deciding on the focus you want for your trip.

Experience nature: wetlands, forests, and trails

One defining natural area is the Erie National Wildlife Refuge in Crawford County. More than 40 percent of the protected area consists of wetland habitats that provide suitable environments for migratory birds and waterfowl. Five nature trails offer different experiences: Beaver Run Trail, Deer Run Trail, Tsuga Trail, Muddy Creek Holly Trail, and Trolley Line Trail. Trails, boardwalks, and information panels create family-friendly areas for observing wildlife.

The 1.2-mile Tsuga Trail leads through dense hemlock stands, mixed hardwood forests, meadows, and wetlands. Anyone who wants to experience different landscapes in one day will find a specific route here with a clearly stated distance. Woodcock Creek Lake lies among gently rounded hills in the rural landscape of central Crawford County. A nearly one-mile route runs across the dam and can be used for walking, jogging, or running.

Lake, railway, and active excursions

Woodcock Lake Park offers a developed swimming beach, four reservable shelters, and a boat ramp with six launch lanes. On Conneaut Lake, the Barbara J Sternwheeler offers boat excursions. In summer, Conneaut Cellars Winery & Distillery adds outdoor wine tastings to the excursion program. This allows nature and water experiences to be combined with a more relaxed stay without committing the entire holiday to a single activity.

The Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad offers a special type of excursion. It travels a 27-mile round trip from the historic Perry Street Station in Titusville through Oil Creek State Park. Hikers, cyclists, and paddlers using trails in Oil Creek State Park can also incorporate a simple one-way train return into their plans. The Bossard Nature Trail is designated as a National Recreation Trail in the National Trails System and features a self-guided route as well as two observation shelters.

Discover history and local culture

The Baldwin-Reynolds House Museum, also known as Mount Hope, was built in 1843 by Henry Baldwin, a justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. It has been owned and operated by the Crawford County Historical Society since 1963. Today, the grounds and gardens serve as a place where the community comes together, learns, and spends time. The Crawford County Agricultural and Fair Museum focuses on the history of the Crawford County Fair and Crawford County’s agricultural heritage. It is open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. every day of the Crawford County Fair.

Further historic highlights include the John Brown Tannery Site, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and the James and Elizabeth Tarr Mansion, which houses one of the most extensive research collections in western Pennsylvania. The Tannery Site provides an off-road parking area, a concrete entrance plaza, and two illustrated, weather-resistant information panels. In Meadville, the paved Ernst Trail runs five miles from Park Avenue Plaza to Route 19; the Ernst Bike Trail is suitable for cycling, walking, running, and inline skating. The Meadville Market House is Pennsylvania’s oldest continuously operated market building.

The exhibit on Conneaut Lake Park also brings playful and historic memories to life. It includes a Skee-Ball game used by many museum visitors, as well as a mechanical game model in which balls are shot into holes and players compete against one another.
