Deschutes reveals its special character where river landscapes, high desert and volcanically shaped mountains meet. The Deschutes River Trail runs for more than 12 miles through pine, juniper and ponderosa pine forests, canyons and basalt rimrock formations. There are also viewpoints, interpretive trails, museums and culinary experiences. This makes it possible to put together a stay combining active days, nature observations and cultural discoveries for a trip with varied interests.

River Trails, Forests and Wide-Ranging Views

The River Run Reach of the Deschutes River Trail includes wetlands where ospreys, songbirds, trumpeter swans, otters and beavers can be found. In the Old Mill Reach, three pedestrian bridges connect the paths across the river and allow for loop routes for hiking and cycling. The trail therefore offers different perspectives on the water and landscape, without every section having the same character.

A prominent viewpoint is Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint east of Bend. Three routes lead to the top of the ancient cinder cone; from the summit, panoramic views extend across the high desert to the Cascade Mountains. Those who choose accommodation based on their preferred daily rhythm can combine such scenic experiences with longer days in nature or other priorities.

Riley Ranch Nature Reserve is also one of the impressive natural destinations. The 184-acre nature reserve on the Deschutes River includes a river canyon and rimrock cliffs. Information panels there explain the geology, history and ecosystem of the protected area.

Discover Volcanic Landscapes

Newberry Crater is an 18-mile-wide caldera with East Lake, Paulina Lake, Paulina Falls and the country’s largest obsidian lava flow. At 1,300 years old, Big Obsidian Flow is the youngest lava flow in Oregon. An easy, one-mile interpretive trail leads onto and across the lava flow made of obsidian and pumice.

Lava Lands Visitor Center is the interpretive center of Newberry National Volcanic Monument and offers exhibitions on the region’s geological and cultural history. It is also home to the fully accessible, 5.5-mile paved Sun-Lava Trail. Lava River Cave allows visitors to independently explore a one-mile-long lava tube. These different formats help with planning: A short interpretive trail can be followed by a museum visit, while the cave offers its own exploration experience.

For a scenic day trip, the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway passes through mountains, lakes and forests shaped by volcanism and glaciation. The byway is 66 miles long; the drive usually takes three to five hours. It begins in the north in Bend or in the south at Crescent Lake. You can take the route length and typical driving time into account when choosing a holiday apartment and planning your day if you are allowing time for a longer scenic drive.

Culture, Regional Traditions and Culinary Experiences

The High Desert Museum brings together art, culture, wildlife, history and science. At LaPine State Park, visitors can choose from hiking, mountain biking, fishing and floating on the water. In winter, the park’s trails are available for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Oregon’s largest ponderosa pine also stands there; its age is estimated at more than 500 years.

The community-owned, nonprofit Sisters Rodeo has taken place in Sisters since 1940. The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show has been a local tradition since 1975. Stitchin’ Post offers in-person and online classes as well as talks throughout the year. In this way, the region complements its nature experiences with crafts, community and long-established events.

For culinary experiences, Bend has more than 30 tasting rooms across seven areas on the Bend Ale Trail. These include breweries, distilleries and cideries in Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Prineville and Sunriver. The Bend Brew Bus takes guests to breweries and craft distilleries in Bend and offers tastings, appetizers and informative tours. Deschutes Brewery Tasting Room offers free guided brewery tours every day; Immersion Brewing provides a Brew-It-Yourself experience in which participants brew their own Oregon craft beer and take it home with them.
