Port Orford: Coastal Views, History and Art
Accommodation in Port Orford
Port Orford combines striking coastal views with a tangible maritime history. At Port Orford Heads State Park, memories of a former lifeboat station come together with views of the lighthouse, town and Humbug Mountain. Port Orford also offers galleries, an annual celebration and the start of the Wild Rivers Coast Scenic Bikeway. South of town, nearby Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve reveals another side of the coastal landscape. Nature, history, art and cycling offer a range of ways to plan your trip.
Coastal Views and the Seascape
From the Headland Trail in Port Orford Heads State Park, you can see north to Cape Blanco Lighthouse and south toward Port Orford and Humbug Mountain. Along the Port Orford Heads Hiking Trails, you can spot seals, sea lions, whales and Cape Blanco Lighthouse. Both notable landmarks on land and marine wildlife are in view as you get to know the coast.
Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve lies just south of Port Orford, between Rocky Point and Coal Point. Rocks and islands rise out of the sea there. They are surrounded by rocky reefs and rocky seafloor with pronounced relief, interspersed with fields of gravel and cobble. This landscape differs from the views along the Headland Trail: here, the shapes of the seafloor and the rocks rising from the water define the scene.
Lifeboat History and Historic Places
Port Orford Heads State Park preserves the site of a lifeboat station built by the Coast Guard in 1934. The station provided rescue services for the southern part of the Oregon Coast until 1970. The 36-foot self-righting motor lifeboat Lifeboat No. 36498 can be seen on every visit to the park, even when the museum is closed for the season. The boat therefore remains a visible part of a visit to the park even when the museum is closed.
Another trace of history is the name of Battle Rock Park. It recalls the 1851 battle between the Qua-to-mah Native Americans and the men of Captain William Tichenor. The park's name thus refers to a specific event in Port Orford's history, not just a landscape feature.
Art, Celebrations and Cycling
Port Orford has eleven official art galleries; the number may change. The Johnson Gallery offers a specific look at the local art scene: it features stonework, sculptures, paintings, ceramics, jewelry and fine crafts by local and regional artists. The range of works spans sculpture and painting as well as ceramics, jewelry and crafts.
The Port Orford Jubilee coordinates an annual July 4 celebration in Port Orford, with a parade and fireworks. Citywide yard sales take place on the Saturday after July 4. If you are planning around the celebrations, check the specific event dates before your trip. For a different kind of trip, the Wild Rivers Coast Scenic Bikeway starts in Port Orford. If you are planning a cycling trip, you can consider the town as a starting point for this route.
The Port Orford Visitor’s Center, which provides information about Port Orford, is at one end of Battle Rock Park. For people traveling together, the range of activities offers a clear choice: coastal views and history, galleries, the annual celebration or a cycling trip each provide a different focus. So if you are looking for a vacation rental in Port Orford, your preferred activities can be a helpful place to start.
