Jackson: Western Heritage, Museums and Water
Accommodation in Jackson
Jackson connects the history of southwestern Oklahoma with fishing, golf and events in Altus. At the Museum of the Western Prairie, exhibits range from geological uplifts and prehistoric seas to irrigated agriculture and Altus Air Force Base. Historic buildings and sites in Olustee add to the picture. This gives you different ways to shape your trip, rather than associating Jackson with just one attraction.
Museums and County History
The Museum of the Western Prairie displays more than 35,000 artifacts and photographs. Visitors can tour the Criswell dugout house and a two-story limestone house built by the Eddleman family in 1891. The collection and buildings bring different facets of regional history to life, from settlement to agriculture and development in southwestern Oklahoma.
The Jackson County Courthouse is another notable historic building. Built in 1910, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In Olustee, the Olustee Public Library and Park tells a different story, one connected to the history of a club. The park was established in 1920 as part of the New State Women's Club's activities; the library building was constructed in 1936 as a Works Progress Administration project. Under Criterion A, the site is considered eligible for listing on the National Register because of its association with the club.
Near Olustee stands the two-story sandstone Cross S Ranch Headquarters. It represents the early settlement and agricultural development of historic Old Greer County. The ranch's history includes a shift from cattle raising to horse breeding and then to an operation focused primarily on crops. This building is also considered eligible for listing on the National Register under Criterion A for its significance in settlement history and agriculture. The Western Trail, a cattle-driving route, ran through Jackson County in the 1870s. The Fullerton Dam, also listed on the National Register, is seven miles northwest of Olustee.
Fishing, Trails and Golf in Altus
Fishing is available year-round at Altus City Reservoir. Jogging trails run around the water, and there are several boat ramps. The shoreline is about two miles long, and the open water covers 140 acres. These figures give a sense of the reservoir's scale without limiting a visit to just one activity: fishing and exercise on the trails appeal to different interests.
Altus offers several golfing options. At Western Heritage Golf Club, two tee boxes per hole allow for an 18-hole round. The Greens of Altus has a driving range, a putting green and a pro shop. So visitors looking to play a round will find different amenities from those mainly seeking places to practice.
Rodeo, Events and Regional Cuisine
The three-day Great Plains Stampede Rodeo in Altus is a PRCA-sanctioned event. The program includes bull riding, steer wrestling, bareback riding, team roping, barrel racing, saddle bronc riding and steer dogging. A parade takes place during the Saturday finale. The Rock-N-Rumble Car Show & Cruise is another annual public event held in Altus.
Guided hunts are also among the activities offered in the region. Based in Eldorado, Rio Rojo Outfitters offers hunts in southwestern Oklahoma along the Red River for trophy white-tailed deer, Rio Grande turkeys, quail, doves, wild hogs and other predators. Eldorado is therefore the stated starting point for this activity.
There are also several options for a meal, each with its own local setting. Fred’s Famous Steak and Saloon in Altus serves home-style cooking, including catfish and grilled steaks. The Backdoor Steakhouse in Blair offers prime rib, steak, shrimp and catfish. The two examples offer different emphases, from classic home-style cooking to a selection of steak and seafood dishes.
Choose a Vacation Rental Based on Your Interests
If fishing, golf or events are central to your stay, you can focus your vacation rental search on Altus. For historic buildings and settlement history, Olustee and its landmarks may be a better fit. If you plan to take a guided hunt, consider Eldorado as the stated starting point. First, think about which of these interests matter to your trip. That can help you focus your search on a suitable location based on the experiences you actually plan, without trying to combine every place into a single day's itinerary.
