Creek County combines impressive Route 66 history with museums, lakes, and short walking trails. Especially around Sapulpa, you can discover the West Sapulpa Road Section, classic cars, and exhibitions on regional development. There are also waterside landscapes that add variety to your trip. When searching for a vacation rental, it is therefore worth considering first whether you want to focus on culture and automotive history or on walks, fishing, and lakeshores.

Route 66 as a common thread

A notable testament to the early road connection is Bridge No. 18 over Rock Creek. It is part of the West Sapulpa Road Section, is 120 feet long, and was built as a steel truss bridge with a brick deck. The 3.3-mile section was constructed in 1924–1925 to connect Sapulpa and Bristow with a paved road. In 1926, it was designated as Route 66; in 1952, it was replaced by a wider, straighter route farther north. Those interested in transportation history can trace different stages in the development of an important road connection here.

Sapulpa's central downtown district is also located along Historic Route 66. During the summer and fall months, the Route 66 Farmer's Market takes place there. The Heart of Route 66 Auto Museum showcases classic cars, special vehicles, and Route 66 memorabilia. Another highlight is the Route 66 Blowout, held annually downtown since 1989 and featuring a car, motorcycle, and truck show with more than 250 vehicles. The program also includes historic walking tours of the city, live music, arts and crafts, and vendor booths.

Museums for shared discoveries

The Sapulpa Historical Museum features a kitchen from around 1900, the 1894 Egan Brothers general store, and dioramas on the Frisco Railroad, the city of Sapulpa in 1929, and the Euchee Mission Boarding School. Photographic stories of the Indigenous and African American populations round out the exhibition. Through the museum, you can also arrange a tour of the Sapulpa Fire Museum or the Waite Phillips-Barnsdall Filling Station Museum. Group tours of the Filling Station Museum are available by appointment.

In Drumright, the Historical Museum is housed in a 1915 Santa Fe depot that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There, eight-foot-high murals tell the story of Drumright and Oklahoma in five sections. In the Oil Room, you can see memorabilia and tools used for drilling oil fields. For families with different interests, a museum day can thus combine Route 66 themes, railroad history, or the history of oil production.

Walking trails and lakes

For a short loop by the water, the Rotary Trail at Kelly Lane Park is a good option. The loop is about one mile long, crosses Rock Creek, and leads into a wooded area where walkers can observe deer and other wildlife. The Kiwanis Trail runs for about 0.3 miles along Rock Creek. On both sides of the paved main trail, there are gravel nature loops. The different trail lengths make it easier to plan the day according to the desired distance.

Pretty Water Lake is a 25-acre spring-fed lake. A scenic paved walking trail is one mile long. During the day, boating with non-gasoline-powered motors is permitted; accessible piers are available for fishing. There is also a trout-stocking program. At Heyburn Lake, located on Polecat Creek in Creek County about 13 miles southwest of Sapulpa, you will find recreational areas with picnic sites, restrooms, showers, playgrounds, a boat launch, and swimming opportunities.

Those who prefer larger bodies of water can include Keystone Lake in their plans. Its shoreline is 330 miles long; sandstone cliffs and sandy beaches shape the landscape. Three nature trails, a riverside viewpoint, and opportunities for public hunting and fishing add to the selection. The lake also has several swimming areas, three alcohol-free beaches, three marinas, and 23 boat ramps.

Choosing the right base

The experiences described are spread across different towns and landscapes. You can therefore choose a vacation rental in Creek County based on which outings should define your vacation: Route 66 museums and historic downtowns, short trails along Rock Creek, or days at a lake. For additional regional orientation, you can also visit the town pages for Mannford and Drumright. In addition, the Frankoma Pottery Company in Glenpool offers earthenware made from locally sourced raw clay; the store carries historic or custom-made Frankoma pottery.

This creates a trip that combines culture, scenery, and your own daily rhythms: a museum for shared discoveries, a short walk along the creek, or an outing to a lake with opportunities for fishing and boating.
