Scioto County Between Rivers, Forests, and Culture
Accommodation in Scioto County
Scioto County combines distinctive river landscapes with hilly terrain on the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The Scioto River and the Ohio River meet here. Those planning a trip with culture, nature, and family-friendly discoveries will therefore find a range of options for shaping their days.
Culture and History in Portsmouth
A good cultural starting point is the Southern Ohio Museum. It opened in 1979 in a historic Beaux-Arts building at 825 Gallia Street in downtown Portsmouth. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of works by Clarence Holbrook Carter. The Art of the Ancients gallery also displays 10,000 prehistoric objects from Indigenous peoples of North America from the Wertz Collection. Guided tours, an interactive children’s area, and exhibitions and events held year-round round out the offerings. Admission is free.
The Portsmouth Floodwall Murals tell the story of Portsmouth from antiquity to the present day through more than 55 murals along over 1,000 feet of floodwall. An immersive audio and visual tour is available through the Portsmouth Murals app. Directly along the Ohio River, the 0.46-mile paved Portsmouth River Trail also follows the river and the murals. For accommodation with a cultural focus, this makes it possible to plan a trip around museums, historical impressions, and the river landscape without linking individual attractions into a fixed route.
The Boneyfiddle District preserves architecture dating from before 1900; the Old Market Square area is considered the cultural center of the community. With uniforms, equipment, medals, and other artifacts, the Boneyfiddle Military Museum explores the military history of the United States. Final Fridays remain a longstanding tradition in the Boneyfiddle District, featuring performances by local, regional, and national music acts. The Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail also adds a historical element: It is more than 84 miles long, includes 44 attractions, and begins at the Scioto County Welcome Center in the historic Boneyfiddle District. Near the Portsmouth Floodwall Murals, it connects with the Ohio River Scenic Byway.
Forests, Lakes, and Trails in the Shawnee Area
Shawnee State Park offers several lakes for fishing, swimming, and boating. For longer hikes, the Shawnee Backpack Trail includes a 40-mile main loop, a 23-mile North Loop, and a 17-mile South Loop. The 5-mile Park Loop Trail leads around Turkey Creek Lake and showcases various ecosystems. Exhibits at the Nature Center provide information about fossils, insects, local history, reptiles, and amphibians.
Shawnee State Forest covers more than 63,000 acres. Equestrians will find more than 70 miles of horseback riding trails and a basic equestrian campground with 58 sites. This landscape is especially suitable as a search focus for a vacation rental or holiday home if you would rather spend your days among lakes, forests, and longer trails than sightseeing in towns. The Copperhead Fire Tower can be climbed at your own risk and offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding forests and hills.
Other Special Experiences
Regional history includes the Otway Covered Bridge, built in 1874 and considered the last remaining covered bridge in Scioto County, and Tremper Mound near the junction of State Route 104 and Route 73 in Rush Township, which was built by the ancient Hopewell people. The Aaron and Mary Kinney Homestead at 1926 Waller Street in Portsmouth is open for visits on Sundays from June through November between 1 and 3 p.m., as well as by appointment.
Local offerings can also complement your stay. The Main Street Portsmouth In Bloom Farmers Market gives regional farms and cottage-industry vendors space in the city center to share produce and goods with the community. The program includes agricultural education, art activities, and musical performances. The Clark Planetarium has 66 seats beneath a domed projection surface with a diameter of 10 meters and offers private shows for groups. River Days takes place annually over Labor Day weekend and has been held for more than six decades; the festival includes a talent show, parade, food trucks, carnival games and rides, and live music, among other activities.
For further options within the destination overview, you can also consider Shawnee State Forest, Wheelersburg, and Franklin Furnace separately. This allows you to tailor your accommodation search to your preferred mix of rivers, culture, forests, lakes, and regional history.
