Morgan County offers a variety of ways to shape a trip: historic sites and cultural themes sit alongside long routes, Burr Oak Lake and protected areas. When planning, consider what you want to define your stay: history, routes on roads and trails, or time in nature. This lets you weigh the different themes deliberately as you plan your own itinerary.

History and Cultural Heritage

At Big Bottom Memorial Park, a precisely dated event commemorates the region’s history. On January 2, 1791, about 25 Delaware and Wyandot warriors attacked settlements of the Ohio Company. The date and approximate number of attackers give the historic event a specific context.

The Multicultural Genealogical Center has a different focus: this nonprofit organization documents the contributions of multicultural and multiethnic families to the social, cultural, political, religious, educational and economic development of the Ohio River Valley. Rather than focusing on a single event, it highlights families’ diverse contributions across several areas of life.

The Quaker Meeting House and Kincaid Cave, also called Henman Cave, likewise represent different historical connections. The Meeting House was built in 1839 at the site where the first Monthly Meeting was held on October 21, 1834. The cave served as a hiding place for Freedom Seekers. Both sites show the range of historical themes in Morgan County, though their stories do not fall within the same period.

Further concrete details are part of the area’s industrial history: Stockport Mill was built in 1906 by the Dover brothers. The Stockport Milling Company was known for its refined flours, Gold Bond Seal of Ohio and Pride of the Valley. It shipped its products by steamboat and on the Ohio & Little Kanawha Railroad, before year-round roads were available. The biography of illustrator and artist Howard Chandler Christy, an important figure of the early 20th century, offers a different perspective. He was born on a farm in Morgan Township.

Getting Around on Roads and Trails

The more than 120-mile Appalachian Byway of Ohio follows State Route 78 through Morgan County and ends in Nelsonville in Athens County. For a different way to find your bearings, pick up a Covered Bridge Trail map at the Visitors Center and then explore the side roads. A route on a designated state highway and exploring side roads with the help of a map offer different approaches to planning.

For hiking routes, it is also worth considering their length and course. Another 110-mile section of the Buckeye Trail runs mostly off-road through national forest and state, local and private lands. On the Burr Oak Backpack Trail, 17 of its 29 miles form a scenic loop around Burr Oak Reservoir. The 110 miles refer to a section of the Buckeye Trail; on the Burr Oak Backpack Trail, the loop is part of a longer overall route.

Lake and Protected Areas

Burr Oak State Park includes a 664-acre lake with bass, sunfish, crappie and catfish. Boating on Burr Oak Lake is permitted with motors of no more than 10 HP; check current regulations before heading out. The lake’s size, fish species and motor limit provide specific points to consider if you want to include nature and boating in your plans.

The Wolf Creek Wildlife Area encompasses 3,978 acres of land owned by the ODNR and designated for public hunting and fishing. At the Luke Chute Conservation Area, the focus is on pollinator habitats. The protected areas mentioned here therefore differ both in size and in the nature and uses described.

Art, Tradition and Choosing Your Vacation Rental

Since 1852, the Morgan County Fair has showcased the best of Morgan County. In southeastern Ohio, the Ohio Art Corridor is a nonprofit outdoor art gallery featuring giant sculptures and parks along routes. Journey with Horses offers individual coaching sessions with horses. These examples highlight different things: a longstanding event tradition, outdoor art and an individual program involving horses.

When choosing a vacation rental in Morgan County, your preferred focus can help guide your decision: would you like to concentrate on cultural history, explore routes on roads and trails, or make natural areas and Burr Oak the main focus? Compare the location of a specific rental with the destinations you have selected for your stay. That way, your search is guided by your planned itinerary without assuming any particular accommodation or location feature.
