Youngstown tells the story of the steel industry while also offering very different ways to explore history, art and hands-on discoveries. Life-size scenes depicting steelmaking, an Arts and Crafts-style mansion, a historic mill building that is still operating, and offerings related to astronomy and STEM each add their own distinct touch. When choosing a vacation rental, you can consider which of these aspects of the city are especially interesting for your trip.

Steel History and American Art

At the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor, the focus is on the history of the steel industry that shaped Youngstown in the 20th century. The center also covers the “last heats”: the final batches of steel produced before the mills closed. Life-size scenes bring both the steelmaking process and the lives of steelworkers to life. This shifts the focus not only to an industrial product, but also to the people and working lives connected with the history of steel.

The Arms Family Museum offers a different way to explore the past. It preserves Greystone, a 1905 Arts and Crafts-style mansion, and features historical exhibits. The Anne Kilcawley Christman Hands-On History Room is geared especially toward young visitors. The Butler Institute of American Art, by contrast, focuses on American art: it was the first museum devoted exclusively to this art, and its collection spans three centuries. Families planning a visit can choose between a history experience aimed at young visitors and an art museum with a broad historical scope in its collection.

Take Part, Be Amazed and Learn

The Ward Beecher Planetarium offers astronomy education programs for public and private groups of all ages. At OH WOW!, the focus is on immersive, hands-on STEM activities for young people of all ages. The two offerings appeal to different interests: one explores astronomy, while the other offers hands-on exploration of STEM topics. The Clarence R. Smith Mineral Museum also recommends a visit for young children, including babies. Visitors are welcome during opening hours without an appointment.

Lanterman’s Mill also combines history with a practical activity: the mill continues to operate as it did in the 19th century, grinding corn and wheat. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Those interested in historical working methods will find a different focus here than at the art and history museums. Fellows Riverside Gardens rounds out the selection with tours by reservation and horticulture classes. Tours require a reservation; the classes offer a separate way to explore horticulture.

Downtown, Parks and Outdoor Spaces

Downtown Youngstown is easy to explore on foot and by bicycle. Free scheduled WRTA bus service is also available there. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, it can help to consider your preferred activities: for days spent exploring Downtown, you can take into account the local attractions and the transportation options mentioned here, while the parks offer additional recreational activities. Youngstown’s parks feature golf, swimming, tennis, team sports, fitness, picnicking and seasonal programs.

Some sports offerings are described in more detail: Wick Park Disc Golf Course is a nine-hole disc golf course in historic Wick Park; Henry Stambaugh Golf Course is a historic municipal nine-hole golf course. Wean Park in Downtown Youngstown is home to the Robinson-Shuba Monument, an outdoor monument commemorating “A Handshake for the Century” between George Shuba and Jackie Robinson. Also on the Downtown Youngstown riverfront, in Wean Park of the Raymond John Wean Foundation, is the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre. The DeYor Performing Arts Center is home to the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and includes the historic Edward W. Powers Auditorium and Ford Family Recital Hall. These places complement the museums and parks with a monument, an outdoor venue and performance spaces.
