Jackson County brings together impressive traces of the past with nature trails, rock carvings, and lakes. You can enjoy its trails and waterways year-round while learning about local history. When choosing a vacation rental, it’s worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: are you fascinated by historic iron furnaces and cultural heritage, would you like to spend time by the water, or do you want to combine both?

Ironmaking History and Cultural Heritage

Buckeye Furnace is a reconstructed blast furnace from the Hanging Rock Iron Region, fired with charcoal. It was built in 1852 and last operated in 1894. The site covers 270 acres. Visitors can explore the reconstructed furnace buildings, a museum, and nature trails. This offers a chance to learn about the history of ironworking while spending time outdoors.

The Welsh-American Heritage Museum tells another chapter of the region’s history. It is housed in the old Welsh Congregational Church, built in 1868. Its collection includes items brought to the region by immigrants from Cardiganshire, Wales, between 1818 and the 1860s. The church’s history and the origins of the objects give a museum visit its own cultural focus.

Salt Lick Village also brings historic buildings and crafts together in one place. These include the McCoy Cabin, a reconstructed salt furnace, the historic Scioto Township House, and a small blacksmith shop. The Jones Museum’s mission is to inform visitors about the history of Jackson County, Ohio, and preserve historic artifacts from the area.

Petroglyphs, Nature Trails, and Paths

At Leo Petroglyphs & Nature Preserve, a 0.5-mile trail winds through a gorge and alongside sandstone cliffs ranging from 20 to 65 feet high. Thirty-seven figurative carvings are etched into a sandstone outcrop. The motifs include people, birds, and animals, as well as human footprints, a fish, a snake, and other depictions. The preserve is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its sandstone petroglyphs.

Two magnolia species are the focus at Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve: the bigleaf magnolia and the umbrella magnolia. Both are listed in the state of Ohio. For a different kind of outing, you can combine the nearly 2-mile Wellston Bike Path with the trail at Lake Alma to create a 5-mile loop. If you enjoy being outdoors, the petroglyph trail and loop offer different natural and cultural highlights.

The historic Kanawha Trail runs through Cooper Hollow Wildlife Area. Public hunting and fishing are permitted in the area; check current regulations before planning such an outing. The remains of Madison Iron Furnace lie near the wildlife area’s headquarters. Together with the historic trail, they recall other traces of the past in the landscape.

Lakes and Water Activities

Jackson Lake State Park covers 106 acres, and its lake is a popular spot for fishing. Lake Alma State Park spans 292 acres in Jackson and Vinton counties. Its landscape includes a 60-acre lake, a wooded valley, and hiking trails. Both Lake Alma and Jackson Lake have swimming beaches mentioned as options for family outings. The lakes in Jackson County are also suitable for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

Hammertown Lake, also known as Jackson City Reservoir, has three boat launches and parking areas. Only boats with electric motors are allowed on the lake. Access is available from the north via County Road 76 (State Street) and from the south via County Road 10 (South Street). Since access and facility information can change, check the latest details before setting out.

Regional Experiences Throughout the Year

The Jackson Apple Festival takes place every September in downtown Jackson. If the festival fits your travel plans, check the event dates in advance. The county’s Amish business community is also part of the local culture: artisans, craftspeople, farmers, and bakers offer goods and services to tourists.

The different highlights can help guide your search for a vacation rental: consider whether lakes and water activities, trails and nature, or history and culture will shape your trip.
